My mum played Bonne, bonne humeur ce matin in the kitchen this morning and just went quiet when she saw the news on her phone. I only knew him from a clip someone posted with Vincent Cassel as an extra in it, had no idea that was the same guy. 68 is no age.
Their story
Pascal Didier Dequatremare was born on 3 August 1958 in the 4th arrondissement of Paris. He became better known under the stage names Tristam Nada, Tristan, and, as a painter, Tristam Diquatrostagno. Pascal Didier Dequatremare was born on 3 August 1958 in the 4th arrondissement of Paris. He became better known under the stage names Tristam Nada, Tristan, and, as a painter, Tristam Diquatrostagno. From adolescence he painted, and from his teens he also chased the energy of rock. That twin loyalty to image and sound shaped a life that never settled into a single box.
At Lycée Jean-Baptiste Say in Paris's 16th arrondissement, he and classmates formed a school band that covered The Who, The Stooges, and the Velvet Underground. After 1976 they discovered The Clash and began writing their own songs. The group became Guilty Razors, a Paris punk outfit often named beside Stinky Toys, Métal Urbain, and Asphalt Jungle. Dequatremare sang; Carlos Perez and José Perez played guitar and bass; Jano Homicid and later Dubuk and Hervé Zénouda completed early line-ups. A chaotic mythology followed them. Short of money for a Stranglers show, they robbed passers-by who turned out to be Alain Maneval and Pathé-Marconi boss Philippe Constantin. Manager Alexis Quinlin turned the threatened lawsuit into an advance. Polydor issued the 1978 single "I Don't Wanna Be a Rich" (also listed as "I Don't Wanna Be a Rich" / "Provocate"). Much of the pressing was recalled and destroyed after further label clashes; the band broke up around the same period. Studio demos later resurfaced and were issued as the album Guilty (Seventeen, 2006), with Born Bad Records releasing Complete recordings 1978 around the time of his death.
Painting pulled him next. In September 1980, with César Maurel and Philippe Waty on Formentera, he co-founded Les Musulmans fumants, a free-figuration and urban-art collective whose French name came from a Chester Himes novel (The Real Cool Killers / "musulmans fumants"). Their first Paris show opened in 1981 in a space on rue des Blancs-Manteaux in the Marais. They worked like a band with brushes, collaborated with Jean-Baptiste Mondino on clips and décors, painted at the Palace, crossed paths with Combas, Di Rosa, Pierre et Gilles, Coluche, and the nightlife of Le Palace and Les Bains Douches. Fabrice Emaer once housed Dequatremare in the Palace stage lodge. Their slogan was "Métissez-vous!" The collective lasted until about 1990.
In 1988 he returned to pop under the simpler name Tristan. Pierre Grillet and Michel Bassignani wrote "Bonne, bonne humeur ce matin," released on Disques Dreyfus. The Mathieu Kassovitz video featured a young Vincent Cassel as an extra and used Dequatremare's own canvases as décor. The single reached about 51st place in French sales charts that year and lodged itself in schoolyard memory. Further singles followed: "Je veux un bébé" (1989), "La chanson des poissons" (1991), and "Costume jaune" (1992). The 1991 album Les femmes et les enfants d'abord, cut at Studio Gang with players from the Johnny Hallyday circle and guest turns including Princess Erika on backing vocals and Marc Lavoine on one track, sold poorly. Dreyfus did not renew. In a 2016 Vice interview he said he was proud of the hit but wished he had made something trashier, closer to Guilty Razors and peers such as Les Rita Mitsouko and FFF. Early in the 1990s he briefly hosted M6's morning slot from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., then stepped away from the music industry.
Painting remained the through-line. He kept a studio in Montreuil's Croix de Chavaux district, later spent time in Aquitaine, and showed work including Pimp My Croute at Galerie Mortier in Paris in December 2021. His gallerist and agent, Stéphane Mortier, told Franceinfo that he had always been a painter and that music had grown from the mixed Paris nightlife of the 1980s, where Grillet offered him the hit. Friends remembered a generous, deep man of Montreuil. After a rapid illness, he died in Pau on 4 August 2026, the day after his 68th birthday. Close friend Anne Israël confirmed to AFP a fulminant cancer. News of his death brought tributes from musicians and critics who still hummed the morning chorus and from those who knew the painter behind the pop name.
Tristam Nada left a short discography, a stubborn painting practice, and a pop earworm that still flips the mood of a French breakfast. He also left the harder-to-classify story of a punk singer who helped invent a street-art crew, lived at the Palace, and then chose the studio over the charts.

In their own words
“C'est une opportunité dont je suis plutôt fier. Je crois que j'aurais dû faire un disque plus trash, plus proche de l'esprit des Guilty, avec les musiciens que je fréquentais à l'époque, genre les Rita Mitsouko, FFF, etc.”
