My sister called me this morning, said the whole town of Azle is in pieces over this boy. I don't follow college football at all but you could hear it in her voice. 19 years old. Just awful.

Tyler Ulrich was a sophomore safety on the football team at Southern Nazarene University, a small NAIA school in Bethany, Oklahoma. He grew up in Azle, Texas, a town outside Fort Worth, where he played high school football and was known in the community for his work on the field and in the classroom. He wore number 30 for the SNU Crimson Storm and was majoring in finance.
At Azle High School, Ulrich made his mark as a varsity player and a strong student. He was named to the All-District Second Team for football and also earned Academic All-State Second Team honors, and he competed as a state powerlifter. By the time he arrived at Southern Nazarene, he had built a reputation as a disciplined, well-rounded athlete, and teammates and coaches at both schools remembered him for his work ethic as much as his play.
Ulrich's death followed a traumatic injury he suffered during a road game against Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, on Saturday, October 10, 2026. According to the university's play-by-play announcer, Ulrich went down on a play that did not initially look unusual, but teammates quickly began waving for medical help, and staff from both teams rushed onto the field. The game was delayed for roughly 45 minutes to an hour while he was treated before being taken to a hospital.
He spent the following days in critical condition at an Arkansas hospital, with his family at his bedside. The university and his relatives asked the public for prayers and privacy while he received care, and word of his injury spread quickly through Azle, where neighbors and former teachers organized prayer chains on his behalf. Southern Nazarene University confirmed his death in a statement on Thursday, October 15, 2026, saying it was sharing the loss of its football player with a heavy heart.
Ulrich's death has been felt across the Southern Nazarene campus and in his hometown, where he was remembered as a well liked teammate and a hometown kid whose injury had already drawn the whole community together in concern before it became a community in mourning. As of this writing, the precise nature of the injury that led to his death has not been publicly disclosed by the university or his family.
