Valery Lysenko, known to fans as Yozh (the Hedgehog), was a Russian drummer and singer and a founder of Mister Twister, the Moscow band that became one of the first and best loved rockabilly groups in the Soviet Union. He sang and played drums with the band for more than forty years, from its first concert in 1985 until his death. He died on 27 October 2026, aged 65.
He was born on 26 August 1961. Reports differ on his birthplace, with RIA Novosti giving Belgorod and TASS sources the Cossack village of Vyoshenskaya in Rostov region. As a boy he studied the bayan, the Russian button accordion, at a music school in Belgorod before taking up the drums. According to Komsomolskaya Pravda, he later spent several years studying at the Higher School of the KGB in Moscow.
In the summer of 1985 he met the double bass player Oleg Usmanov, who invited him to join him and guitarist Vadim Dorokhov as their drummer. Lysenko came up with the band's name, taken from Samuil Marshak's famous satirical poem, and the trio played its first concert on 25 December 1985. They played on the Arbat in 1986, became the resident band of the Blue Bird cafe in Moscow and appeared at Rock Panorama 87. Their debut album came out on the state label Melodiya in 1990 and sold 337,000 copies, and the band appeared on the television programmes Vzglyad, Shire Krug and Utrennyaya Pochta.
After Dorokhov died suddenly in 1991, Lysenko kept the band going through many line-up changes. Mister Twister released Devki, pivo i rok-n-roll in 1993, appeared in the 1994 film Nocturne for Drum and Motorcycle with Sergei Bezrukov, played with Lee Rocker of the Stray Cats in 1997, and performed at the 2008 Moscow premiere of the film Stilyagi. Songs such as Kanikuly lyubvi and Mister Twister kept the band on festival stages for decades. From 2009 he also sang in Beseda, a duo performing popular Cossack songs.
In 2025 he had a stroke and recovered after rehabilitation, according to friends. In late October 2026 he fell and was injured while staying at a friend's dacha, and he was found dead the next morning. People close to him told RIA Novosti and TASS of his death on 28 October, and said the circumstances were still being established.
