Vatsala Rajagopal was an Indian actress whose warm, often humorous grandmother roles made her one of the most familiar faces in Tamil cinema and television from the 1990s onwards. She came to the screen unusually late: after many years on the Chennai stage, she made her film debut at around the age of 60 in Mani Ratnam's Roja (1992), and went on to appear in hundreds of films.

She was born in December 1933 and grew up in Thiruvananthapuram, where she developed a love of dance and theatre at school. In 1953, after her marriage, she moved to Chennai and took a job as a clerk in the office of the Accountant General. K Balachander, later one of Tamil cinema's most influential directors, was then a senior officer in the same office. She went on to join Rasika Ranga, a theatre troupe run by the cartoonist Sridharan, and from 1979 she acted in some 450 plays over 25 years.

Her stage work brought her to the attention of Mani Ratnam, who cast her as the grandmother of Madhoo's character in Roja. She followed it with Sathi Leelavathi (1995), in which she played Ambujam Maami, Kaalamellam Kadhal Vaazhga (1997), Rhythm (2000), Winner (2003), Anniyan (2005), Mozhi (2007), Dhaam Dhoom (2008) and Kalyana Samayal Saadham (2013), as well as the Hindi film Aur Ek Prem Kahani and the Telugu film Adhurs. Reports at her death said she had appeared in more than 400 films.

She was just as well known on television. She appeared in the Sun TV serials Chithi, Anandham, Vasantham, Magal and Mundhanai Mudichu, in Vijay TV's Puthu Kavithai, and in Balu Mahendra's anthology series Kadhai Neram. In Chithi she again played a character called Ambujam Mami, echoing her role in Sathi Leelavathi. Across theatre, television and cinema, audiences of several generations came to know her as the affectionate, quick-witted grandmother of Tamil popular culture.

Vatsala Rajagopal died in Chennai on 30 October 2026 from age-related ailments. Reports gave her age as 93. Her body was kept at her home in Pallavaram for the public to pay their respects, and members of the Tamil film industry and fans offered condolences.

My mom called me this morning just to tell me, she's been obsessed with Chithi since it aired and never really stopped. I didn't grow up with any of this but I watched Mozhi with her on a trip home once and got it immediately. 92 years old and still showing up as someone's favorite grandmother on screen.
