Read the cause of death at my kitchen table and had to put the phone down. Four years with it, same as my brother in 2019. 67 is no age at all.

Virjibhai Keshavbhai Thummar (31 May 1959 to 7 October 2026), widely known as Virji Thummar, was an Indian politician from the Saurashtra region of Gujarat. A farmer's son who first made his name as a farmers' leader and co-operative organiser, he was elected to the Gujarat Legislative Assembly from Babra in 1990 and 1995, represented Amreli in the 14th Lok Sabha from 2004 to 2009 for the Indian National Congress, and returned to the Assembly as MLA for Lathi from 2017 to 2022. He was known across Gujarat for an aggressive, outspoken political style and was counted among the Congress party's most prominent Patidar faces in Saurashtra.
He was born on 31 May 1959 at Vavdi Road in Amreli district, into a farming family. His parents were Keshavbhai and Santokben Thummar. He studied commerce at K.K. Parekh Commerce College in Amreli, graduating with a B.Com., and listed his own professions as agriculturist and trader. On 25 February 1982 he married Nilaben, and the couple had one child, a daughter, Jenny.
Thummar started his public life in the countryside. According to Amreli district Congress president Pratap Dudhat, he began as a farmer leader and became a member of the district panchayat at a young age. His official Lok Sabha biography records some twenty years of work in rural areas on farmers' problems with electricity, water and crop insurance, which he took up with both the Gujarat and central governments. He built a parallel career in the co-operative movement: he chaired the Vavdi Road Seva Sahakari Society from 1986, founded and chaired the Kunkavav Nagrik Co-operative Bank, sat on the boards of IFFCO (2001 to 2004), NAFED, the Gujarat State Consumer Co-operative Federation and the Amreli Jila Sahakari Sangh, and was a trustee of IFFCO's Kisan Sewa Fund Trust. He was also president of the Lions Club of Amreli from 1987 and a trustee of the Sardar Patel Seva Trust.
His first Assembly victory came in 1990, when he won Babra on a Janata Dal ticket. He held the seat again in 1995, this time as a Congress candidate. In the 2004 general election he won the Amreli Lok Sabha seat for the Congress by just 2,030 votes over the BJP's Dileep Sanghani, breaking the BJP's long hold on a constituency it had won in most elections since 1991. In Parliament he spoke on farmers, irrigation, crop insurance and regional development. He also served as a general secretary of the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee.
His career was not without controversy. In June 2009 Junagadh police arrested him and seven relatives over the Saurashtra Kisan Vikas Trust, a farmers' welfare trust he had floated in 2005 and 2006, after farmers alleged they had been cheated of large sums. In April 2014, while he was the Congress candidate for Amreli, video clips circulated on WhatsApp appearing to show him discussing payments to a local Aam Aadmi Party candidate. He lost that election to the BJP's Naranbhai Kachhadiya. In December 2023 Amreli police registered a non-cognisable offence against him after he called Prime Minister Narendra Modi a "dalal" (broker) at a Congress meeting; he replied that he had only been raising the voice of the public.
In 2017 he made a comeback, winning the Lathi seat in Amreli district by 9,343 votes over the BJP's Gopalbhai Vastarpara. He lost it to the BJP's Janak Talaviya in 2022. His family stayed at the centre of Amreli's Congress politics: his wife Nilaben also contested the Amreli Lok Sabha seat, and his daughter Jenny Thummar, who returned from London after an MBA, became president of the Amreli district panchayat, led the Gujarat Pradesh Mahila Congress, and was the Congress candidate for Amreli in the 2024 Lok Sabha election.
Thummar lived with cancer for about four years. He died at his residence in Amreli at about 12:15 pm on Wednesday 7 October 2026, aged 67. His funeral procession left his home in Amreli at 5 pm the same day, attended by political leaders from across Saurashtra. Tributes came from across party lines, including from Shaktisinh Gohil, Gujarat Congress president Amit Chavda, Jagdish Thakor, AAP leader Isudan Gadhvi and leaders of the ruling BJP. "Whether he won or lost, not a single day went by without him raising his voice for people's issues," said Pratap Dudhat.
