Walked into that building every single day for four years as a business major, his name right there on the wall. Didn't know much about him as a person but you could feel what he built for us. Sending love to Clemson today.

Wilbur Owens Powers, known to everyone as Billy, was a South Carolina businessman and philanthropist who built one of the larger commercial construction companies in the Southeast and, with his wife Ann, gave Clemson University the largest academic gift in its history. The Wilbur O. and Ann Powers College of Business at Clemson bears their names.
He was born on 14 April 1936 and grew up on a family farm in Timmonsville, South Carolina, with his sister and their parents, Fred and Katherine Powers. Days began with chores at 3:30 in the morning. When the family home was destroyed by fire, neighbours gave them a place to live and helped them rebuild, an experience he later described as the lesson that shaped his life: you always helped your neighbours.
After finishing high school in 1953 he enrolled at Clemson College to study civil engineering and joined the Air Force ROTC, hoping to become a pilot. In 1956 his father fell ill and he went home to work the farm. He then joined the South Carolina Department of Transportation, set up on his own as a land surveyor, and founded Powers Construction Company in Florence. It grew into one of the region's largest commercial builders, putting up condominiums, churches, schools and government buildings across the Southeast. With Ann he later expanded into real estate, aviation and manufacturing in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Aviation remained a lifelong passion after a first flying lesson during his highway department years. He earned his pilot's licence and ran a charter service that made aircraft available to organ transplant patients and others in medical need. In 2016 the couple founded the W.O. and Ann Powers Foundation to support families, education and the Florence area. Clemson awarded him an honorary doctorate of humanities in 2004 and its Alumni Association's Distinguished Service Award in 2011. In 2020 the Powerses gave 60 million dollars to Clemson's business school, which was renamed in their honour.
Billy Powers died after a brief illness on Monday 2 November 2026 at his home in Florence, aged 90. Clemson President Ben Ayers said the university had lost "a truly exceptional person whose generosity and quiet service changed countless lives." Clemson's carillon rang in tribute, memorial wreaths were laid at the college that bears his name, and a celebration of life was arranged at Central United Methodist Church in Florence on 5 November. He was survived by Ann, his wife of 44 years, his children Tim and Penny, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In their own words
“You haven't really helped someone until you do things for people who can't do something back in return.”
A saying recalled by Clemson News, 2026

Same, class of 2019. Didn't think about it till now how much that name meant.
