My cousin called me from Baton Rouge to tell me, she knew I'd been hunting down everything of Siscar's I could find in translation for years. I read Pais de arena on a plane and could not look out the window for an hour after. 79 years old, carrying all of that.

My sister called me in the middle of the afternoon just to tell me Jack Kirksey had passed, she knew I'd want to know. I left Livonia thirty years ago but she still sends me the Chamber newsletter, and I remember him at every ribbon cutting like it was his own front porch. 97 years old.

I didn't find her work until I was in my sixties, taking a film class just for fun after I retired. Someone handed me In the Realm of Pleasure and I remember sitting with it on my porch, rereading the same page about Dietrich three times because I'd never thought about looking at a film that way before. 73 is no age. Thank you for what you taught people like me who came to it late.

Barry was the voice of hockey for so many of us. Every time I turned on ESPN, there he was with that unmistakable energy. He made the game come alive for people like me who didn't grow up around rinks. A real loss for all of hockey.

Watched her talk about designing neighborhoods and making audiences feel surprise and delight, and it stuck with me. She cared so deeply about the details, about making sure every person in that theatre had something beautiful to see. The stages she built will stay with us.
