okay so this is one of those where I have to explain to everyone at brunch why I'm sad about a French music executive nobody's heard of, and I don't even have a great answer. I got into the whole indie label thing a few years back reading about IMPALA fights with the majors, kept seeing his name, Naive, this label that did Carla Bruni's early stuff, and I just liked that he started that after already running Virgin France, like he built the big machine then went and built the alternative to it. anyway I was on a work trip reading Le Monde's business section on my phone in a hotel bar in Lisbon when I saw he'd died at 79, in Paris, and I just sat there a minute. never met the guy obviously. edit: he was 79, not that it changes anything, just wanted to get it right
