I grew up watching him on screen and then I watched him become an advocate. Euphoria's Cal was brutal and complicated, just like he was real about his illness. His daughters are going to know he fought hard.

A son of the Peninsula who lifted so many people up. His faith and his strength in the end were beautiful to witness. Thinking of Billie, Georgia, and Rebecca.

53 is too young. ALS took him but he gave us a year of straight talk about what that disease does. That matters.

Bay Area childhood and a call to the stage

Eric William Melvin was born on November 9, 1972, in San Francisco. He and his younger brother were raised in their mother's Jewish faith, and he celebrated a bar mitzvah. His father, a Navy veteran and architect/interior designer, died by suicide when Eric was seven. He grew up on the San Francisco Peninsula, played varsity water polo, and found acting through a high-school production of All My Sons. Local reporting notes Sequoia High School years in Redwood City and graduation from San Mateo High School before the move south to pursue acting.

Sequoia and San Mateo High Schools

Dane attended Sequoia High School in Redwood City, California, roughly 1987-1990, appearing in yearbooks on the water polo team. He transferred and graduated from San Mateo High School in San Mateo in 1991. He did not pursue a widely reported college degree; after high school he moved to Los Angeles to work as an actor.

From guest spots to McSteamy, The Last Ship, and Euphoria

After bit parts in the 1990s, Dane gained recurring notice on Gideon's Crossing and Charmed (Jason Dean). His career shifted when Grey's Anatomy cast him as Dr. Mark Sloan in 2005; he became a regular and a pop-culture figure as McSteamy. Film work included X-Men: The Last Stand, Marley & Me, Valentine's Day, and Burlesque. He headlined TNT's The Last…

Marriage, daughters, and complicated love

Dane married Rebecca Gayheart on October 29, 2004. They had Billie Beatrice Dane (born March 3, 2010) and Georgia Geraldine Dane (born December 28, 2011). After separating in 2017, Gayheart filed for divorce in 2018; in March 2025 she filed to dismiss the petition. They never finalized a divorce and remained legally married. Dane was later linked to Priya Jain…

Jewish upbringing, recovery, and ALS advocacy

Raised Jewish with a bar mitzvah, Dane spoke more in later years about sobriety, mental health, and service than about partisan politics. He sought treatment for prescription-drug dependence in 2011 and paused The Last Ship in 2017 for depression. After his ALS diagnosis he framed advocacy as duty: helping patients, pushing research funding, and refusing silence. He partnered with I…

McSteamy, Grey Sloan, and a public ALS fight

On Grey's Anatomy, Mark Sloan's popularity helped rename the fictional hospital Grey Sloan Memorial. He showed range from network heartthrob to post-apocalyptic captain to Euphoria's morally tangled father. In 2025-2026 his most consequential role may have been off-screen: putting a famous face on ALS progression, research gaps, and caregiver strain. The ALS Network named him Advocate of the Year in…

Ensemble recognition and ALS Advocate of the Year

Dane shared in Screen Actors Guild Award nominations as part of the Grey's Anatomy ensemble during the show's peak years. Individual Emmy wins are not part of his record. In 2025 the ALS Network named him Advocate of the Year for public education and support for people living with ALS.

Leaked video, addiction treatment, and public separation

In 2009 a private video showing Dane, Gayheart, and Kari Ann Peniche nude and using drugs was published by Gawker. In June 2011 he entered a California treatment center for prescription-drug dependence after an injury. Production on The Last Ship halted in April 2017 while he dealt with depression. The couple's long separation and on-off divorce filing (2018-2025) were covered…

ALS, February 2026, and last words to his daughters

Dane publicly announced his ALS diagnosis in April 2025. Progression was rapid: loss of right-arm function by mid-2025, wheelchair use by autumn. He died on February 19, 2026, in Los Angeles at 53. Family representatives said he passed Thursday afternoon surrounded by friends, his wife, and daughters Billie and Georgia. A death certificate reported respiratory failure with ALS as the underlying cause; he was cremated on February 27, 2026. Netflix released his pre-taped Famous Last Words interview the next day.
