Eric Dane

Eric William Melvin was born on November 9, 1972, in San Francisco, California. He later took the surname Dane. He and a younger brother were raised in their mother's Jewish faith; he had a bar mitzvah. When he was seven, his father, a Navy veteran and architect/interior designer, died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Dane grew up on the Peninsula, attending Sequoia High School in Redwood City (about 1987-1990), where yearbooks show him on the water polo team under a stepfather's surname, and graduating from San Mateo High School in 1991. A school production of Arthur Miller's All My Sons helped turn him toward acting.

He moved to Los Angeles in the early 1990s and built a long ladder of guest roles: Saved by the Bell, The Wonder Years, Roseanne, Married... with Children, and others. Recurring work followed on Gideon's Crossing and, more visibly, as Jason Dean opposite Alyssa Milano on Charmed (2003-2004). Feature and TV-movie credits included Serving in Silence, Helter Skelter (as Charles Tex Watson), The Basket, X-Men: The Last Stand (Multiple Man), Open Water 2, Marley & Me, Valentine's Day, and Burlesque.

His defining break came in 2005-2006 when he guest-starred as plastic surgeon Dr. Mark Sloan on ABC's Grey's Anatomy. Audience reaction made him a series regular. A towel-clad bathroom entrance became a cultural watercooler moment, and fans nicknamed him McSteamy beside Patrick Dempsey's McDreamy. He remained through season 8, appeared early in season 9 after Mark's plane-crash death, and returned in 2021 for a dream-sequence episode. Seattle Grace was later renamed Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, a permanent on-screen tribute to Mark and Lexie Grey. From 2014 to 2018 he led TNT's The Last Ship as Captain Tom Chandler. In 2019 he reinvented himself again as Cal Jacobs, the troubled father on HBO's Euphoria, continuing into season 3, released posthumously. Later credits included Bad Boys: Ride or Die (2024), Amazon's Countdown (2025), and other film and TV work.

On October 29, 2004, he married actress Rebecca Gayheart. They had two daughters, Billie Beatrice (born 2010) and Georgia Geraldine (born 2011). Gayheart filed for divorce in 2018 after a 2017 separation; in March 2025 she moved to dismiss the petition. They remained legally married and co-parents. Dane later dated Priya Jain and, at the time of his death, was in a relationship with Janell Shirtcliff. Public setbacks included a 2009 leaked nude video with Gayheart and Kari Ann Peniche, a 2011 stay in treatment for prescription-drug dependence after an injury, and a 2017 production pause on The Last Ship while he sought care for depression.

In April 2025 Dane told PEOPLE he had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). He said symptoms had begun roughly eighteen months earlier; by June he told Diane Sawyer on Good Morning America that his right arm had stopped working; by October he was using a wheelchair. He kept working when he could, spoke in Washington on prior-authorization and research funding, partnered with I AM ALS on Push for Progress, was named ALS Network Advocate of the Year in 2025, joined the Target ALS board in December 2025, and filmed ALS-awareness work including an episode of Brilliant Minds. He also prepared a memoir, My Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments, for Maria Shriver's Open Field imprint (Penguin Random House), scheduled for release on November 3, 2026.

Eric Dane died on February 19, 2026, in Los Angeles at age 53. His family said he passed Thursday afternoon after a courageous battle with ALS, surrounded by dear friends, his wife, and his daughters. A death certificate listed respiratory failure with ALS as the underlying cause; he was cremated on February 27, 2026. The day after his death, Netflix released his Famous Last Words interview, recorded months earlier, including a final message to Billie and Georgia: he had stumbled but tried, and he urged them to fight until their last breath. Co-stars from Grey's Anatomy, Charmed, Euphoria, and beyond remembered his humor, vulnerability, and devotion to his children. His on-screen McSteamy swagger and his off-screen ALS advocacy together define a career that reached millions and a final chapter spent trying to change what an ALS diagnosis means.
