I only know him from a long piece I read years ago about foreign ambassadors in Moscow after the Soviet collapse, the decade he was there, 1994 to 2004, ending up as dean of the whole diplomatic corps by the time he left. I was in St Petersburg for two weeks with my husband in 2003, just tourists, and someone on our tour mentioned the Swedish embassy like it was some kind of fixture, old and steady while everything else was falling apart. Didn't think about him again until the quote started going around this week, the one about the war in Ukraine bringing only misery to both sides, no bitterness in it at all, just plain and tired. 87 is a long life to spend believing talking is better than not talking. edit: fixed the year, it was 2003 we were there not 2004

I don't really follow Guatemalan politics but I was in Antigua a couple years back and our guide mentioned the SAT scandal, something about customs fraud, and his name kept coming up then, Foppa. Read about the shooting this morning with my coffee and couldn't stop thinking about it. 43 years old. He was a firefighter for thirteen years before any of the prosecutor stuff, pulling people out of buildings, and then he spent the rest of his life going after people with power. I never met him obviously, I'm not even from there, I just can't shake it. Edit: just saw his grandmother was that poet, Alaide Foppa, who disappeared back in 1980. Whole family lost to this country's violence it seems.
