Pius Olakunle Osunyikanmi was a Nigerian political scientist and public servant from Ile Oluji in Ondo State. He served as Ondo State Commissioner for Education under Governor Olusegun Mimiko and then spent ten years, from 2013 to 2023, as Director General of the Nigerian Technical Aid Corps, the federal agency that sends Nigerian professionals to work as volunteers in African, Caribbean and Pacific countries.
Born in Ile Oluji on 3 August 1971, he finished at Orere Grammar School in 1989 and studied political science at Ondo State University, now Ekiti State University, graduating in 1997. He went on to a master's degree at the University of Ibadan in 2001 and a doctorate at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, in 2008.
He worked for years as a special assistant in state and federal government, including to the Ondo State Commissioner for Health, the Secretary to the State Government and the Federal Minister of Housing and Urban Development. After Mimiko became governor in 2009 he served as the governor's special adviser on intergovernmental affairs and multilateral relations, and from 2010 to 2011 he was Commissioner for Education. In that post he set up the Education Quality Assurance Agency to address falling standards and ordered the closure of some private schools judged to have poor facilities. Reports at his death described him as one of the most trusted confidants of the Mimiko government.
In 2011 he became Special Adviser on International Relations to President Goodluck Jonathan, and in August 2013 Jonathan appointed him Director General of the Technical Aid Corps, under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. President Muhammadu Buhari reappointed him in 2018, and he held the post until August 2023. In 2015, after Mimiko backed another candidate to succeed him as governor, Osunyikanmi broke with his former principal and moved from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress.
Osunyikanmi died in the early hours of 24 October 2026 at a hospital abroad, aged 55, after an illness whose nature was not made public. Nigerian news outlets that reported his death the same day remembered him as a distinguished scholar and public servant, and said his family would announce burial arrangements. He was married to Adebukola, a professor of political science, and they had three children.
