Read the 1991 Bulgarian constitution for a comparative law seminar years ago, his name was all over the drafting notes. Didn't know anything about him as a person. Just that the thing held together when a lot of post 89 charters didn't.

Alexander Dzherov was a Bulgarian jurist, law professor and politician who helped write the country's democratic constitution. As chairman of the legislative committee of the Seventh Grand National Assembly, he was one of the principal drafters of the Constitution of the Republic of Bulgaria adopted in 1991, and he later served as deputy chairman of the National Assembly.
Alexander Asenov Dzherov was born in Sofia on 27 June 1929 into an old family with roots in Macedonia, a family that also produced General Kliment Dzherov. His maternal grandfather was the well known jurist Angel Karagyozov, and his brother Dimitar Dzherov became a surgeon. He studied law at Sofia University and then worked as a lawyer for more than three decades, specialising in property law. In 1979 he defended a doctoral dissertation on the principle of autonomy of the will in private international law.
After the political changes of 1989 he joined the revived Radical Democratic Party, then part of the Union of Democratic Forces, and became its deputy chairman in 1993. He was elected to the Seventh Grand National Assembly, which drafted and adopted the 1991 constitution, and chaired its legislative committee. He went on to sit in the 36th, 37th and 38th National Assemblies, chairing the legislative committee again in the 36th and serving as deputy chairman of the 38th. In 1996 he moved to the Democratic Party, where he was deputy chairman from 2000 to 2006.
Alongside politics he built an academic career. He became a professor in 1995 and was one of the founders of the law department of New Bulgarian University, which he led as dean in 1993. He taught civil law, property law and the law of the cadastre and land use, and wrote more than 50 scholarly works, including books on property law, restitution and the general part of civil law. In 2001 the university named him an honorary professor.
Alexander Dzherov died on 25 October 2026, aged 97. His death was announced by the former constitutional judge Georgi Markov, who called him a great jurist, a noble man and a loyal friend. Bulgarian media remembered him as one of the fathers of the constitution. The cause of his death was not made public.
