Andrey Terentyev was a Russian stage and screen actor from Saint Petersburg who became widely known for playing Spirt, one of the four modern-day treasure hunters thrown back into the Second World War in Andrei Malyukov's 2008 film We Are from the Future. Over two decades he built a filmography of more than 50 roles, many of them in Russian crime and war dramas, and he also worked as a stage actor and director. He died in October 2026 at the age of 44.

He was born on 14 July 1982 in Neustrelitz, in what was then East Germany, where his parents were serving: his mother worked at a military unit and his father in the Interior Ministry. His father was killed on duty when Andrey was small, and the family, his mother, his elder brother and Andrey, moved to Smolensk. There he first acted with the Dialog theatre studio while still at school.

After several attempts he won a place at the Saint Petersburg State Academy of Theatre Arts, where he studied on the course of Veniamin Filshtinsky and graduated in 2006. He went on to act with the Saint Petersburg independent and repertory companies Priyut Komedianta, Osobnyak and Baltic House, and he directed a production of Olga Pogodina's play The Clay Pit.

His screen debut came in 2006 with the film Nenormalnaya. Two years later We Are from the Future made him recognisable to a wide audience. Steady television and film work followed, including Leningrad 46, Vysokiye Stavki, Goryunov, Realizatsiya, Podsudimy, Krylya Imperii, Pervy Otdel, Igra s Ognyom, Prezumptsiya Nevinovnosti and the police series Filin, as well as the 2021 war drama Solntsepyok, in which he played Evgeny. One of his last projects was the 2026 war drama 10 Stories of Love and Death.

Terentyev died in the night of 19 to 20 October 2026. His death was announced on 22 October by the production company Triix Media, with which he had worked for many years. His widow, Svetlana, told the news agency TASS that he had died of blood loss from internal bleeding caused by a perforated ulcer. About 50 relatives, friends and fellow actors attended a farewell in Saint Petersburg on 23 October, where his former teacher Veniamin Filshtinsky spoke and he was seen off with long applause in the theatre tradition. He was buried on 24 October near Kazan.

He was survived by his wife Svetlana, a fellow graduate of the Saint Petersburg academy, and their son, who told mourners that Terentyev had become a grandfather shortly before his death.

Not someone whose work I followed closely, but I watched We Are from the Future on a friend's recommendation last winter and his performance held the film together more than the premise did. Forty four is no age at all. My condolences to his wife.
