Saw the line about 70 or 80 men surrounding a former lawmaker in broad daylight and no one coming. That's the whole rot of it in one sentence. Sawai Man Singh Hospital, 69 years old. Lord have mercy on that family.

Atar Singh Bhadana (1 March 1957 to 11 October 2026) was an Indian politician, farmer leader and stone-crusher businessman who represented the Bayana constituency of Bharatpur district in the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly from 2003 to 2008 as a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). A Gurjar leader from Haryana who built his political career in eastern Rajasthan, he died at the age of 69 after he was attacked with sticks and stones during a clash with villagers at his stone-crusher site in Bhonda village, Bharatpur district. His death prompted statewide political outrage and a large police investigation.
Bhadana was born on 1 March 1957 in Pali village in Faridabad district, Haryana, into a farming family. His father, Budh Singh Bhadana, served as the village sarpanch, and a six-acre stadium in Pali is named after him. Bhadana studied for a BA at Maharshi Dayanand University in Rohtak. Family friends recalled that he was a strong athlete in his youth; one of his younger brothers, Fateh Singh, became a national-level athlete and another, Bir Singh Bhadana, became a pilot.
He entered public life in his home village. In 1982 he was elected sarpanch of Pali unopposed, and in 1994 he won the post a second time. He ran a stone crusher in Faridabad and, about three decades before his death, started a crusher business in Rajasthan, eventually moving there with his family.
Bhadana first contested the Bayana Assembly seat on a BJP ticket in 1998 and lost. In December 2001 the BJP appointed him state president of its Rajasthan Kisan Morcha, the party's farmers' wing. In the 2003 Assembly election he won Bayana with 41,377 votes, defeating his nearest rival, Dhruvendra Singh, by 19,405 votes. During his 2003 to 2008 term he also sat on the Assembly's Public Accounts Committee.
His relationship with the BJP broke down during the 2007 Gurjar reservation agitation, when Vasundhara Raje was chief minister. Reports say he opposed the government's stance during the movement, and the party suspended him. In 2008 he joined the Bahujan Samaj Party, which expelled him within months over alleged anti-party activities. In October 2008 he joined the Indian National Congress and contested the Nagar seat in Bharatpur district, losing to the BJP's Anita by 4,584 votes (22,942 to 18,358). He later returned to the BJP. In 2023 his official X account showed him attending party meetings and events in Bhilwara, Nagaur and Deoli-Uniara.
Bhadana kept close ties with leaders on both sides of the Haryana and Rajasthan border. Union Minister of State Krishan Pal Gurjar counted him among his close friends. He married Kamlesh Bhadana and had a son, Arjun Bhadana, a Supreme Court lawyer, and several daughters, including Kiran Bhadana, an IAS officer who in April 2025 became the first woman Deputy Commissioner of Lahaul-Spiti in Himachal Pradesh. News18 reported that two other daughters are doctors. Late in life he was living at a farmhouse in the Bayana area, and his family also has a home in Delhi.
The dispute that led to his death centred on a mining lease held in his wife's name and a crusher plant near the hills of Bhonda village, in the Weir area of Bharatpur district. Villagers from Bhonda and nearby villages had protested against the lease for about two years. They accused the operation of encroaching on village grazing land and of illegal mining,. After a Rajasthan High Court direction, a district committee in January 2026 reclassified the pathway to the lease, but tensions continued. The crusher had been shut for about a year, and villagers said they had been protesting for 10 to 15 days against plans to reopen it.
On the evening of Sunday 11 October 2026, Bhadana went to the crusher site as work was being restarted. Police said he and his aide, Gagan Sharma, were attacked with sticks and stones. Villagers alleged that Bhadana had arrived with 40 to 50 people to remove protesters, and both sides accused each other of assault. Bhadana was taken to a hospital in Weir and then referred to Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital in Jaipur, which he reached at around 11.30 pm with head injuries and multiple fractures. He died there during treatment that night. Sharma was treated in Bharatpur.
After a post-mortem by a medical board, his body was taken to Pali, where he was cremated on the evening of 12 October 2026. His son Arjun lit the pyre, and Krishan Pal Gurjar and former MLA Lalit Nagar were among those present. His family filed a complaint naming 35 to 40 people. Police arrested the man they described as the prime accused on 16 October, and by 26 October they said 22 accused had been arrested. The case remained under investigation, and no court had ruled on it at the time of writing.
Former chief minister Ashok Gehlot, Sachin Pilot, state Congress chief Govind Singh Dotasra, Leader of the Opposition Tika Ram Jully and MP Hanuman Beniwal all said the killing raised serious questions about law and order in Rajasthan, especially as Bharatpur is Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma's home district. Gehlot visited the family in Delhi on 14 October, and BJP leader Satish Poonia visited them on 22 October.
He is remembered by supporters as a Gurjar farmer leader who rose from village sarpanch to legislator, and his death became one of the most prominent political killings in Rajasthan in 2026.
