Bruno Musaro was an Italian Catholic archbishop and long-serving Holy See diplomat who represented the Vatican as apostolic nuncio across Latin America, Africa and the Middle East. Born in Andrano, in the province of Lecce, on 27 June 1948, he died on 26 September 2026 at the Casa di Betania hospice in Tricase, aged 78.
Ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Otranto on 19 September 1971, he studied at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy and entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See in 1977. Early postings took him to Korea, Italy, the Central African Republic, Panama, Bangladesh and Spain before his elevation to the episcopate. Those years formed the practical training that later nunciatures would draw on.
On 3 December 1994 Pope John Paul II named him apostolic nuncio to Panama and titular archbishop of Abari. He received episcopal consecration on 6 January 1995 in St Peter's Basilica from John Paul II, with Giovanni Battista Re and Jorge Maria Mejia as principal co-consecrators. Later nunciatures followed in Madagascar, the Comoros, Seychelles and Mauritius (from 1999), Guatemala (2004), Peru (2009), Cuba (2011), Egypt with the additional role of apostolic delegate to the Arab League (2015), and Costa Rica (2019). Pope Francis accepted his resignation for age on 11 July 2023. In January 2026 his titular see was recorded as Castro di Puglia.
While nuncio in Cuba he spoke publicly, during a 2014 visit to Italy, about poverty and civil conditions on the island under socialist rule, remarks that drew international attention. In Egypt he worked to improve Catholic relations with Sunni institutions after an earlier rupture, including the climate around the 2016 meeting between Pope Francis and Grand Imam Ahmad al-Tayyib of al-Azhar. He also assisted as a co-consecrator at episcopal ordinations in several of the countries where he served.
After retirement he returned to Andrano. Corriere Salentino reported that he died on the morning of 26 September 2026 at Casa di Betania in Tricase, and that his funeral would be celebrated on 27 September at the Church of Maria Santissima delle Grazie in Andrano.
