Saw this come through on a UK news feed I follow and just sat with it a while. 44 years old. Shelton, Stoke-on-Trent, Thursday evening. Didn't know him at all, just felt the weight of it.

Christopher Bradbury, known to family and friends as Chris, was a 44 year old man from Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England, who died after being stabbed on Ridgway Road, near Hanley Park in the Shelton area of the city, on the evening of Thursday 23 July 2026. He was not a public figure during his life. His name became known across Stoke-on-Trent, and far beyond it on social media, because of the murder investigation that followed his death.
A family death notice published through Williamson Brothers Family Funeral Directors describes him as "Chris aged 44 years of Stoke, formerly of Hanley" and remembers him as "a loved Son, a dear Brother and friend." In a tribute released through Staffordshire Police, his family said: "He was loved so much by his mum and partner, brother and sister. He will be sadly missed by his father and partner." Details of his upbringing, schooling and working life have not been made public, and this page does not speculate about them.
Staffordshire Police were called to Ridgway Road at 7.40pm on 23 July following reports that a man had been stabbed. According to police, he was found by members of the public, who called the emergency services. West Midlands Ambulance Service sent an ambulance, a paramedic officer, the Midlands Air Ambulance and two North Staffordshire BASICS doctors. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Large police cordons were put in place on Ridgway Road and across part of Hanley Park, and the following Saturday's Hanley parkrun was cancelled because of the investigation.
The murder inquiry was codenamed Operation Greenman. Within days, officers had arrested several people. Police said a 25 year old man had been arrested on suspicion of murder and a 17 year old boy from Newcastle-under-Lyme on suspicion of assisting an offender; the boy was later bailed with conditions, and a 24 year old man was released with no further action. Christopher was formally named by police on 27 July 2026, when his family's tribute was released.
Between 28 and 30 July 2026, four men were charged with his murder: Subhan Nadeem, 20, Dhannish Mahmood, 19, Hassan Ahmed, 19, and Qays Mahmood, 25, all from Stoke-on-Trent. Detective Chief Inspector Ian Fitzgerald of Staffordshire Police's major investigations department reminded the public that legal proceedings were active and asked people not to speculate about the circumstances on social media. At Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on 28 September 2026, the four men denied murder, BBC News reported, and a trial was listed to begin on 22 February 2027, expected to last around two weeks. Anyone charged is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
In August 2026 an inquest into his death was opened and adjourned while the criminal proceedings take place. Coroner Phillip Vollans told his family: "I'm very sorry to Chris' family that we have to meet in these circumstances. You have my sincere condolences."
His funeral, a service and cremation, took place at Carmountside Crematorium in Stoke-on-Trent on Friday 21 August 2026. The family asked mourners to wear casual clothing rather than mourning attire, requested family flowers only, and asked that donations go to The Ben Kinsella Trust, the anti knife crime charity founded after the killing of 16 year old Ben Kinsella in London in 2008.
On 19 October 2026, Staffordshire Police said a 17 year old boy from Stoke-on-Trent, who cannot be named because of his age, had been charged with committing an act or series of acts intended to pervert the course of public justice, and with using a motor vehicle without third party insurance, in connection with the investigation into Christopher's death. He was bailed with conditions to appear at North Staffordshire Justice Centre on 24 November 2026. He has not been charged with murder.
The killing drew a large response online, much of it from people who never knew him, and police repeatedly appealed for restraint while the case is before the courts. To those closest to him, he is remembered not as a headline but as a son, a brother, a partner and a friend who, in his family's words, "will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by all who knew him."
