Christy Knowings

Christy Lorraine Knowings was born on February 25, 1980, in the Bronx, New York City. She grew up with her fraternal twin brother, actor Chris Knowings, and began building characters and accents as a child. She attended Manhattan's Professional Performing Arts School and later told interviewers she had been creating characters since about age four. In a Pop Culture With Pat podcast conversation quoted by the Los Angeles Times, she explained that she did impersonations but preferred inventing original characters rooted in dialects, even trying to make small roles (such as a science-fair judge) stand out with an accent or a slightly dangerous choice.

Her television path into national kids' comedy ran through Nickelodeon. After appearing on the 1997 Rosie O'Donnell-produced Nickelodeon sketch special And Now This, Knowings was discovered for All That. Multiple biographies recount that casting directors noticed her in a green room when her twin encouraged her to do impressions; she auditioned and was hired. Producers and writers then flew from Hollywood to New York to see her. In a 2019 interview quoted by the Los Angeles Times she recalled filming many characters and, about a week later, being asked if she wanted to move to California.

Knowings joined All That in 1997 for Season 4 alongside newcomers including Danny Tamberelli and Leon Frierson, overlapping with Kenan Thompson, Kel Mitchell, Amanda Bynes, Lori Beth Denberg, Josh Server, and later Nick Cannon and Gabriel Iglesias. She remained through Season 6 (through 2000), appearing in about 32 episodes. Her characters included Jessica in the recurring Whateverrr!!! sketches with Bynes; Penny Lane (dental assistant to Bynes' Dr. Bynes, a role she inherited in the Superdude universe); newscaster Brenda Stone on Channel 6 1/2 News; Winter Wonders on What Do You Do? (a Figure It Out parody of Summer Sanders); Lieutenant Fondue; Yoko in CJ and the Cloudy Knights; and later Season 6 favorite Gloria Bankhead, an over-the-top Martha Stewart-style lifestyle host she loved playing all day long. She was also a panelist on Nickelodeon's Figure It Out for several episodes. She made a small green-room cameo in the show's 10th anniversary special, and Variety notes a Season 10 guest appearance.

Knowings spoke often about representation. Identifying as Native American Afro-Latina and Bronx-raised, she told Bustle (quoted by LA Times and Us Weekly) that Black '90s kids told her they paid special attention because she was the only Black girl on the show in her seasons, and that All That showcased the unity that we all wanted, needed and still need in a very humorous way. On Whateverrr! with Amanda Bynes she said audiences did not see a Black girl and a white girl so much as two intense teens who both loved Leonardo DiCaprio and Kobe Bryant. She credited Kenan, Kel, Lori Beth, and the writers and producers with making her feel welcome when she joined. She later said she shaped Brenda Stone's voice herself; it came out unexpectedly Fran Drescher-like from the page. Musical guests she remembered warmly included 98 Degrees and the Spice Girls.

After stepping back from full-time Hollywood acting to focus on life beyond the series, she kept performing. IMDb credits her on the 2009 film Mother and Child as performer and writer of the song Being (soundtrack), not as a feature screenwriter. From 2008 to 2011 she appeared in three Sesame Street episodes alongside her twin Chris (then a series regular as Chris Robinson), including twin-themed episodes such as Twins Day and Siblings. In 2020 she released the folk single To the World, which she promoted on her own X account. Her manager Al Hill told Variety and others she was always creating across singing, acting, and dancing, and was professional and dedicated. IMDb trivia also notes she apprenticed under writer/director Kevin Jarre and lived with him for about six years before his death in 2011; no spouse is named in 2026 obituaries.

Christy Knowings died on August 11, 2026, at age 46. According to family accounts reported by TMZ and confirmed to outlets by her father Charles Dunn, she suffered a severe asthma attack on August 7 that led to cardiac arrest and significant brain damage. She was placed on life support at a Los Angeles-area hospital (Long Beach per the Los Angeles Times). The family removed life support on August 11. Aunt Tyleah Joseph announced the death on Facebook, calling her an outstanding actress, comedian, twin sister, and amazing daughter. In September 2026 a death certificate obtained by People listed immediate cause as cardiac arrest, with acute hypoxic respiratory failure and status asthmaticus as leading conditions and asthma as the underlying cause. Us Weekly reported the certificate also shows she was cremated on August 19 and her ashes were scattered at sea. A GoFundMe memorial fund organized on behalf of parents Renee Knowings-Dunn and Charles Dunn raised money for mortuary and funeral expenses.

Tributes poured in. Kenan Thompson wrote that the news hit hard, calling her a real one and one of the funniest people out here. Kel Mitchell called her truly one of a kind, fearless when it came to comedy, and thanked her for characters that were big, memorable, and completely her own. Sesame Workshop mourned her appearances beside Chris. Castmates including Alisa Reyes and Lisa Foiles praised her talent, kindness, and spiritual warmth. She is survived by her twin Chris; parents Charles Dunn and Renee Knowings Dunn; and siblings Charles Dunn Jr., Ashley Dunn Ledger, Yavonka Vega, Tamea Dunn, and Lee Elder.
