Colette Sénami Agossou Houeto, the Beninese educator, feminist poet, and politician who briefly served as Minister of Primary and Secondary Education in Boni Yayi's first government, died on 29 September 2026 at the age of 87. Beninese news outlets including Benin Web TV and La Nouvelle Tribune reported her death in early October 2026.

Born on 6 March 1939 in Porto-Novo in Ouémé Department, she attended local primary schools and secondary school in Cotonou before university study in Europe at the University of Strasbourg and Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. She later also studied at Aix-en-Provence, according to La Nouvelle Tribune. Returning to Benin, she worked as a certified German teacher and rose in educational administration.

From 1977 to 1981 she directed the National Institute for Training and Research in Education (INFRE). In the same period she published poetry and essays on women, education, and African tradition, including the 1981 volume L'aube sur les cactus (Dawn on the Cacti), with a preface by Jean Pliya. Earlier essays appeared in Présence Africaine and related collections on women in African tradition. From 1986 to 1991 she worked with the African Development Bank on integrating women into development programs. Benin Web TV also notes later work with UNICEF in the education sector.

In April 2006 a decree of President Thomas Boni Yayi named her Minister of Primary and Secondary Education. Her cabinet tenure was short: she left the government in August 2006 and was succeeded by Evelyne Sossouhounto-Kaneho. She was active in Adrien Houngbédji's Democratic Renewal Party. From 2008 to 2015 she served as first deputy mayor of Porto-Novo, according to Benin Web TV. She was named a Commander of the National Order of Benin.

Houeto's public life joined classroom and ministry work with poetry and feminism. English and French reference sources remember her as one of the women who headed Benin's education ministry and as a writer who argued for women's education and participation in development. The Historical Dictionary of Benin records her ministerial entry, and ministry lists of former education leaders continue to include her name. She died in late September 2026; a more specific place and medical cause of death were not detailed in the early obituaries used here.

Wait, she just died? I was literally reading about L'aube sur les cactus last week after it came up in a piece on African poetry. 87 years old. Didn't know much about Benin politics but that collection stuck with me.
