Francisco Guterres, popularly known as Lu-Olo, was an East Timorese independence fighter, Fretilin leader and statesman who served as the sixth president of Timor-Leste from 2017 to 2022. Born on 7 September 1954 in Ossu, in Viqueque district of what was then Portuguese Timor, he spent his adult life first in the national liberation movement and then in the civilian institutions that followed the restoration of independence in 2002. His career spanned guerrilla command, constitutional drafting, the speakership of parliament and the presidency of Southeast Asia's youngest nation.

He joined the resistance in 1974 and remained active through the twenty-four-year Indonesian occupation, rising as a guerrilla commander and senior Fretilin figure. In 1998, after the death of resistance commander Konis Santana, he assumed political leadership of Fretilin's armed struggle. After the 1999 United Nations-backed independence referendum he helped reorganise Fretilin for civilian politics. In 2001 he was elected president of the Constituent Assembly that drafted the constitution. As president of the National Parliament he proclaimed the Restoration of Independence on 20 May 2002 and swore in Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao as president of the republic. He served as the first speaker of parliament from 2002 to 2007 and later completed a law degree at the National University of Timor Lorosa'e.

After several unsuccessful presidential bids he won the 2017 election and served one term, losing reelection in 2022 to fellow independence figure Jose Ramos-Horta. Party colleagues and government tributes remembered him as a voice for national unity, dialogue and political stability while the young republic consolidated its democratic institutions. Fretilin, which he led for many years, described his death as a profound loss for those who shared the goal of a free, democratic and sovereign country.

Guterres was married to Cidalia Lopes Nobre Mouzinho Guterres; they had four children, a daughter and three sons. He died on 21 June 2026 at Prince Court Medical Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, aged 71, while receiving intensive medical treatment. The cause was not immediately disclosed. Timor-Leste declared seven days of national mourning with flags at half-mast. He was buried on 26 June 2026 at the Garden of Heroes and Martyrs in Metinaro, Dili, among national heroes of the resistance, as tens of thousands lined the streets of the capital to pay their respects.

71, in a hospital far from home. My brother went the same way a few years back, overseas, everyone hoping the next day would be better. I didn't know much about Timor-Leste's politics before this but reading about the 2002 independence proclamation tonight, that's a man who did something with his life. Sorry for his family.
