Georgios Mazonakis was born on 4 March 1972 in Nikaia, a working-class neighbourhood of Piraeus, and raised there with family roots on his father's side in Sitia, Crete. He grew up on classic Greek laiko voices such as Stratos Dionysiou, Yiannis Parios, Marinella and Haris Alexiou, alongside foreign rock. By about fifteen he had decided he wanted a professional singing life. He later said he never really lived a normal adolescence because he started working so young.
His first club work included the Mousiko Retire in Nikaia. In the summer of 1992, singing in a nightclub in Patras, he was heard by music industry figures linked to PolyGram Greece (later Universal Music Greece), a discovery often associated in Greek press with Nikos Mouratidis. His debut album, Mesanihta Kai Kati, appeared in 1993. The 1994 follow-up Me Ta Matia Na To Les pushed him onto the charts with songs such as "3 to proi", "Aniko se mena" and "Mi mou zitas". Gold and platinum records followed through the 1990s, including Mou Leipeis (1996) and the platinum Paidi Tis Nihtas (1997). A best-of package even reached Italy after "Mou Leipeis" featured in a car advertisement.
From 2001 he moved to Heaven Music and worked closely with composer Phoebus (Foivos). Albums such as Koita Me (2002) and the platinum Savvato (2003) fused laiko feeling with contemporary pop and dance production. "To Gucci Forema" became one of his most recognisable anthems. He kept changing stage image and club design, including collaborations with choreographer Konstantinos Rigos that put nightclub audiences on sofas and put Mazonakis himself in skirts and platforms, a look that Greek critics and audiences debated for years. He sang Stamatis Kraounakis songs on the 2002 film soundtrack Varethika Na Skotono tous Agapitikous Sou, toured Cyprus, Germany, Australia and Greek-American cities, and was singled out by Turkey's Hurriyet as a face of Athens nightlife at Votanikos.
Later Heaven-era sets included Ta Isia Anapoda (2010, 2x platinum), Leipei Pali O Theos (2012) and To Paraxeno Me Mena (2015). In 2015 he won the MTV Europe Music Award for Best Greek Act. In 2016 "De Goustaro" topped Greek airplay. In 2017 he left Heaven for Minos EMI (Universal), releasing Agapo Simeni (2019) and a run of charting singles. The 2022 collab "Tora Tora (Boro Boro)" with Arash extended his reach again. On television he performed and hosted MadWalk and MAD VMAs, judged The X Factor Greece (2017) and Your Face Sounds Familiar, and from 2024 coached on The Voice of Greece.
His private life was closely guarded. Greek press reported a relationship with dancer Maria Delonga around 2016-2017; he was not known to have married or to have children. Parents Manolis and Kleio and sisters Vasso and Maria were central for decades; Vasso long worked with him professionally. From 2025 a bitter public rupture included his involuntary admission to Dromokaiteio Psychiatric Hospital after a family-requested order, property and money disputes, and his statements that he felt betrayed yet still loved them. In February 2026 he had gallbladder surgery at Metropolitan Hospital after admission for abdominal pain. In a July 2026 television interview, later replayed as his last, he said faith and his career had saved him and that "God gives you what you can handle."
On 9 September 2026 he went to a private internal-medicine clinic in Kolonaki. Greek reports said cardiac arrest occurred there (SKAI reported it during a planned plasmapheresis when a venous catheter was placed). EKAB began CPR; he arrived at Elpis Hospital at 16:45 without spontaneous breathing or pulse. CPR continued without success. The hospital's bulletin set the official time of death at 17:40. He was 54. He had been due to mark 33 years on stage at Technopolis City of Athens on 20 September 2026. He left a catalogue that remade Greek nightlife entertainment and kept laiko-pop on the charts for more than three decades.
