Günther Geis was a German Catholic priest and canon lawyer who for a quarter of a century stood at the centre of the Diocese of Limburg. He served as its vicar general from 1993 to 2009, led the diocese as administrator during the vacancy of 2007, and from 2009 to 2018 was dean of the Limburg cathedral chapter, the body that in 2016 elected Georg Bätzing as bishop.

He was born in Obertiefenbach, now part of Beselich in Hesse, on 29 June 1948. After leaving the Fürst-Johann-Ludwig-Gymnasium in Hadamar in 1967 he studied theology at the Sankt Georgen school of philosophy and theology in Frankfurt, and was ordained priest in Limburg Cathedral by Bishop Wilhelm Kempf in 1973. He served as a curate in Braunfels, Lahnstein, Flörsheim am Main and Wiesbaden before going to Rome, where he took a doctorate in canon law at the Pontifical Gregorian University in 1986 and was vice rector of the Santa Maria dell'Anima college.

Back in Limburg, Bishop Franz Kamphaus made him vice official and diocesan judge in 1986, while he also served as parish priest of Balduinstein. In 1993 Kamphaus appointed him vicar general and he joined the cathedral chapter. Bishop Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst reappointed him in 2008, and he stepped down as vicar general in 2009, when he became dean of the chapter. Pope Benedict XVI named him an honorary prelate in 2010.

As dean and episcopal vicar for the synodal bodies he championed shared responsibility between clergy and lay people, and he guided the chapter through the period of renewal after the crisis over Bishop Tebartz-van Elst. On 1 July 2016 he announced Bätzing's appointment in the cathedral with the words Habemus episcopum. He retired in June 2018 after 45 years as a priest, saying that church offices were tasks for a time while his calling as a priest remained, and he continued to help with pastoral work in retirement.

Günther Geis died on 31 October 2026, aged 78, after a short and serious illness. The diocese announced his death the next day. Bishop Bätzing said his heart had beaten for the Diocese of Limburg, its people and its cathedral, and cathedral dean Wolfgang Pax recalled his faithfulness to his priestly vocation.
