In their own words

I know I am closer to a funeral than to a bar mitzvah. Until then, I say live every day and enjoy what you have.

Ilan Dar, ynet interview with Liron Sinai, 10 October 2014 (about aging while promoting The Farewell Party).

When I open the television I fall asleep, and that is also fun.

His 2014 interview about The Farewell Party stayed with me. The idea that theatre doesn't change history but makes you a little better. That's everything, isn't it. Goodbye, Ilan.

Saw him in Uncle Vanya at Haifa in the early 70s. Proper actor. The kind that makes you believe every word. Sad news from Tel Aviv today.

Grew up watching Krovim Krovim with my Israeli cousins every time we visited. Ilan was always the funniest person in the room but you could tell he was serious about the work. Such a long career. Rest easy.

He said theatre makes you a little better person. Watching him work for seven decades, I believe that was true of him as well. The stage in Tel Aviv feels emptier tonight.

So many of us learned what real acting looked like because of him.

Never saw him act but my mother loved Krovim Krovim. She'd quote that stingy character for decades. Sounds like he was nothing like it in real life.

Watched him in Krovim Krovim as a kid and never forgot that face. Sixty years later and his timing was still perfect. Rest well, Ilan.

Born in Tel Aviv, stayed in Tel Aviv, gave everything to the stage there. That kind of loyalty to a place and an art form doesn't happen much anymore.

My grandmother used to say his character on that sitcom was nothing like the real man, that he was one of the kindest people she knew from the theatre world. I wish I'd gotten to see him perform live just once.

Tel Aviv beginnings

Born Ilan Belweiss on 30 January 1937 in Tel Aviv to Polish-born parents. Trained in the drama track at Herzliya Hebrew Gymnasium with Avraham Ninio, Shraga Friedman, and Menahem Golan. Entered professional theatre at Ohel in 1958.

Herzliya Gymnasium drama

Formal drama education at Gymnasia Herzliya under major Israeli stage teachers of the era; practical apprenticeship continued immediately at Ohel and the founding Haifa company rather than a separate conservatory degree publicly emphasized in sources.

From Ohel and Haifa to the Cameri

Founding Haifa Theatre actor (from 1961) in Brecht, Chekhov, Goldoni, and Levin; Cameri company from 1977 with landmark roles including Eichmann in Kastner and Herbst in Shira; solo hit Like a Bullet in the Head (~400 performances).

Home in Tel Aviv

Married to set and costume designer Ruth Dar; one daughter, Ariel. Lived in Tel Aviv. Colleagues after his death stressed warmth and generosity that contrasted with his famous tightfisted sitcom character.

Art that makes you ask forgiveness

In a 2014 ynet interview tied to The Farewell Party, he argued theatre may not change history but can make a person "a little better," and spoke carefully about dying with dignity without claiming legal certainty for euthanasia in Israel. He valued live audiences and disliked canned sitcom laughs.

Vitak 9 and the repertoire stage

Krovim Krovim fixed him in Israeli popular memory; Cameri, Beit Lessin, Habima, and Haifa credits mark a full repertoire career; younger viewers still cite growing up on his Ilan. Theaters and SHAAM memorialized him as inseparable from Israeli theatre, film, and television for nearly seven decades.

Prizes across decades

1989 Hanna Rovina Prize and Tel Aviv Abraham Ben-Yosef Prize (Shira / Herbst); 2012 EMI honour; 2018 Yakir Tel Aviv-Yafo; 2023 Arik Einstein Prize for the Arts; Ophir nomination context for The Farewell Party supporting work (JFC / coverage).

September 2026

Died 7 September 2026 in Tel Aviv-Yafo, aged 89. Cause not made public. Funeral reported at Kiryat Shaul. Survivors: Ruth Dar and daughter Ariel. Tributes from Gaon, Rivlin, Sidon, Cameri, Beit Lessin, SHAAM, and national press.
