Jan Kříž was a Czech theoretical physicist and university leader who served as rector of the University of Hradec Králové from July 2024 until his death in October 2026. A specialist in mathematical methods in quantum physics, he was also one of the country's best known organisers of physics competitions for gifted young people, leading Czech teams at the International Physics Olympiad for many years.

He was born in Hradec Králové on 14 December 1974. He studied theoretical physics, astronomy and astrophysics at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Charles University in Prague, earning his master's degree in 1998, his PhD in 2003 and the RNDr. degree in 2004. From 2001 to 2003 he worked in the department of theoretical physics at the Nuclear Physics Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Řež.

In 2003 he returned to his home city to join the physics department of the University of Hradec Králové, first in the Faculty of Education and, from 2010, in the new Faculty of Science. He headed the physics department, served as vice dean, and from 2016 to 2019 was the university's vice rector for strategy and development. He was dean of the Faculty of Science from 2019 to 2024. In December 2023 the academic senate elected him rector, and President Petr Pavel appointed him with effect from 1 July 2024. His research covered quantum waveguides, quantum mechanics with deformations and time series analysis in biomedicine.

From 2007 he travelled with Czech students to the International Physics Olympiad. He chaired the central committee of the Czech Physics Olympiad, was the Czech mentor for physics at the European Union Science Olympiad, and sat on the advisory committee of the president of the International Physics Olympiad from 2014 to 2017. He was a member of the Civic Democratic Party (ODS) and was elected to Hradec Králové city council in 2022.

He married Michaela Křížová, a physics teacher he had met as a student in Prague, and they had two children. In November 2025 he told the university community that he had been diagnosed with cancer and was undergoing chemotherapy, and he kept working as rector.

Jan Kříž died on Wednesday 21 October 2026, aged 51. The university announced his death the same day, saying he had compared his fight in the last months of his life to a hockey match, and describing him as a fair and upright man whose enthusiasm could carry crowds and who lived and breathed for the university.

51. Same age as me. Read about the hockey line he used, about not winning the last game, and it stuck with me all day. Thinking of his wife Michaela and their two kids.
