My dad had the 1982 finish taped over and over, Johncock holding off Mears by a car length. We watched it every Memorial Day when I was a kid in our living room in Spokane, him yelling like it was live every single time. 90 years old. Damn.

My uncle died the same way, years back, and reading that she wrote three pages before it happened undid me a little. Fourteen. I keep thinking about her mother finding out what those pages said. This kind of grief doesn't get easier with repetition, it just gets more familiar.
