Sandra Peña

Sandra Peña died in Seville on 14 October 2025, aged fourteen. The immediate cause was suicide by jumping from the roof of her residential building after school. Her family and much of the subsequent public debate attribute the despair behind that act to prolonged bullying and to institutional failures to protect her.

Funeral details were kept largely private. What became public was the legal and political afterlife of her case, which continued to generate rulings and commentary nearly a year later.

Sandra Peña Villar grew up in Seville. She lived with her family in the San Carlos area and, by the mid 2020s, was a secondary student at Colegio Irlandesas Loreto, a private school operating under Spain's concertado system of public subsidy.

Those who spoke about her after her death remembered an affectionate teenager. Coverage of the case noted that she had spoken of wanting to join the military when she was older. She celebrated her fourteenth birthday on 9 September 2025, little more than a month before she died.

At Irlandesas Loreto she was in the early years of compulsory secondary education. The school later became the focus of her parents' complaint because, they said, staff knew about conflict with a small group of classmates and did not treat it with the urgency Spanish anti bullying protocols require.

Her mother said she had asked that Sandra not be placed with three particular girls. The centre did make some class changes, but the family maintained that wider protective and psychological protocols were not activated.

The family described months of insults, mockery and exclusion. Reporting summarised their account as including homophobic elements. Zara Villar said she raised the problem with the school leadership at least twice, including before the new school year, and that she felt the centre treated serious harassment as ordinary teenage quarrels.

After Sandra's death the Junta de Andalucía stated that the school had not activated the mandatory bullying protocol or the suicide prevention protocol despite those warnings. That official finding became a central public fact of the case.

On Tuesday 14 October 2025 Sandra attended classes as usual. Relatives later said she wrote farewell material that day, including during mathematics, and that after leaving school she went to the roof of her block on Calle Rafael Laffón rather than going home first.

She jumped from the building and died. The suddenness of the act stunned her family. In the days that followed, neighbours created an informal memorial of flowers, candles and photographs near the site.

Police examined her phone and social media as part of the inquiry. Prosecutors opened lines of investigation involving the school and other minors. Her parents later publicised autopsy findings that included a blood alcohol reading and cuts, arguing that the timing raised questions about what had happened in the short period after she left school.

Those forensic details remain part of a contested public record; courts have not treated them as settling criminal responsibility on their own.

Sandra's death prompted national coverage and local grief. A Change.org petition called for action against school bullying, and a Spain-wide concentration was organised for 24 October 2025 at midday outside town halls.

Campaigners and commentators linked her case to earlier Spanish debates about bullying, including memories of the Basque teenager Jokin. For many people who did not know her personally, Sandra became a symbol of children whose warnings were not heard in time.

Zara Villar, José Manuel Peña and Isaac Villar spoke repeatedly to Spanish media. They rejected school statements that sufficient measures had been taken and argued that the centre had misled them and others about how the conflict was handled.

Their public campaign kept pressure on education authorities and on the criminal and administrative tracks that followed. They also asked for exemplary action from the juvenile prosecution service regarding the school.

The parents filed a complaint against the school and named members of its leadership for reckless homicide, psychological injury and degrading treatment. In May 2026 an investigating judge discontinued that strand, and on 17 September 2026 the Audiencia Provincial de Sevilla confirmed the filing.

Judge Mercedes Alaya's chamber described the school's response as absolutely deficient and contrary to the urgency of the bullying protocol, while concluding that Spanish criminal law still required a direct causal link to the death that had not been established for those charges. Other investigative routes remained open according to contemporary reporting.

Sandra's legacy is the uncomfortable national conversation her death forced about whether Spanish schools actually use the anti bullying and suicide prevention tools written into regional protocols. For her family, remembrance is tied to the demand that no other child be left unprotected after adults have been warned.

Each new court decision, including the September 2026 Audiencia confirmation, renews attention on the gap between administrative failure and criminal causation, and on the unfinished work of prevention.
