Jérôme Bignon was a French avocat and centre-right politician from the Somme who spent four decades in local and national office and became a leading voice for coastal and wetland protection. He died in Paris on 30 September 2026 at the age of 77.

Born on 1 January 1949 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, he qualified as a lawyer in 1973 and founded the firm Bignon-Lebray. After the death of his father, Charles Bignon, a former deputy for the Somme, he entered local politics at 31 and served as mayor of Bermesnil from 1980 to 2001. He was also a general councillor for the canton of Oisemont for many years and a regional councillor in Picardie in the 1980s and early 1990s, keeping his legal practice alongside elected work.

He represented the Somme's 3rd constituency in the National Assembly from 1993 to 1997 and again from 2002 to 2012, first with the RPR and then with the UMP. He lost the seat in 1997 and 2012 to Socialist opponents, among them Vincent Peillon. From 2014 to 2020 he sat in the Senate for the Somme. In later years he joined the constructive-right movement Agir and the Independents group in the upper house. Across those mandates he specialised in environment, the sea, water and biodiversity, including Grenelle de la mer littoral work and leadership of the Assembly's hunting and territories study group.

Alongside electoral office he chaired the Baie de Somme mixed syndicate and the Conservatoire du littoral from 2008 to 2012, helped create Ramsar France in 2011 and led it into the mid-2020s, and pressed wetland and shoreline causes in parliament. In 2022 he was made an Officer of the Legion of Honour, after earlier appointment as Chevalier in 1998. After leaving elective office he continued voluntary work, including long service chairing Oisemont Solidarité. French regional media including actu.fr confirmed his death on 30 September 2026; his French Wikipedia biography records that he died at Hôpital Lariboisière in Paris following a stroke. Friends and fellow elected officials in the Somme remembered a durable local figure whose name was tied to the Baie de Somme as much as to party politics.
