John James Sweeney Jr. was an American Democratic politician who represented the 26th District in the Pennsylvania State Senate from 1975 to 1978, the first Democrat ever elected to that Delaware County seat. He later spent three decades as a federal government administrator and analyst. He died at his home in Haverford, Pennsylvania, on 2 October 2026, aged 99.

Sweeney was born in Philadelphia on 1 June 1927, the oldest child of John James Sweeney Sr. and Helen (Harkins) Sweeney. His father died when he was nine, and he helped care for his mother and sisters, working local jobs, including in a butcher shop, while attending St. Gregory's Grade School and St. Thomas More High School, from which he graduated early. He served in the United States Army and the Army Reserve, was stationed in occupied Japan and reached the rank of staff sergeant. He later attended Temple University and worked as a real estate broker.

In 1974 Sweeney won the 26th Senatorial District, covering part of Delaware County, succeeding Republican Clyde Dengler. In the Senate he chaired the Military Affairs and Aeronautics Committee and was vice chairman of the Consumer Affairs Committee, and in 1978 he chaired an investigating committee looking into Adjutant General Harry A. Mier Jr. He announced that he would not seek re-election in 1978, saying the senator's salary of $18,720 could not support his family, and Republican F. Joseph Loeper won the seat.

After the Senate he worked as a federal government administrator and analyst, retiring after 30 years, and was also vice president of a mortgage company. He served on the Pennsylvania Public Television Network Commission and as the Irish American representative on the Pennsylvania Heritage Affairs Commission. In his community he chaired the Upper Darby Youth Panel, volunteered as an ombudsman for the Delaware County Office of Services for the Aging, taught religious education and served as a communion minister at St. Andrew the Apostle Church in Drexel Hill. He was a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus and an honorary Kentucky Colonel.

A devout Catholic, Sweeney was married for 65 years to Dolores Theresa (Grzymala) Sweeney, who died before him. They had seven children, one of whom, Kevin, also predeceased him. His family announced that he died peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones. His funeral Mass was held on 15 October 2026 at St. Denis Church in Havertown.

Read that he walked away from the Senate seat in 78 because, in his words, the pay could not support his family. Not many would say that part out loud. First Democrat to ever hold that Delaware County seat, and he left it on principle about money, not scandal. That stuck with me more than any campaign speech I've read.
