Jorge Neto was a Portuguese lawyer and Social Democratic Party (PSD) politician who represented the Porto constituency in the Assembly of the Republic for three legislatures and served as Secretary of State for Defence and Veterans in the government of Pedro Santana Lopes. He died on 22 October 2026 at the age of 69, and the PSD remembered him as "a man of notable culture and intelligence".
Jorge Manuel Ferraz de Freitas Neto was born on 3 January 1957. The PSD said he was born in Lousada, in the Porto district, a municipality with which he kept a close connection all his life. He first joined the party's youth wing, the JSD, in 1974, the year of the Carnation Revolution, and began writing for Pelo Socialismo, a paper published together with the party newspaper Povo Livre. He graduated in law from the University of Coimbra in 1980 and was admitted to the Portuguese Bar in 1982.
He built a career as a lawyer and founded the firm Jorge Neto and Associados, with offices in Porto and Lousada. He was elected to parliament for Porto in the eighth, ninth and tenth legislatures, sitting from 1999 to 2004 and again from 2005 to 2009, and was vice president of the PSD parliamentary group from 2001 to 2004. Between 2000 and 2002 he was a member of the shadow cabinet formed by the party leader Jose Manuel Durao Barroso.
In November 2004 he left parliament to join the Santana Lopes government as Secretary of State for Defence and Veterans, replacing Jose Pereira da Costa, and he held the post until the government left office in 2005. Back in the Assembly, he later directed Povo Livre from October 2007 to April 2010, decades after his first contributions to its sister paper. He also taught as a guest lecturer at the Universidade Independente, studied political theory at the London School of Economics, and served on the board and as vice president of the general council of the Confederation of Portuguese Business (CIP) from 2014 to 2016. He sat as an arbitrator at the commercial arbitration centre of the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The PSD announced his death on 22 October 2026 in a note of condolence that described him as an active party member, a lawyer of recognised merit and a man whose capacity for dialogue and generosity left an indelible mark on national politics and on Lousada. The cause of death was not made public.
