Krishna Mirle AchutaRao was one of India's most trusted voices on climate detection and attribution: the rigorous work of showing how much of observed warming and extreme weather can be traced to human influence. He died on 4 September 2026 at the age of 62. Hindustan Times reported a prolonged illness; his wife, Mila Mitra, told HT that he had faced health issues for a long time yet was still teaching at IIT Delhi, and that the loss felt sudden.
He preferred the scholarly form Krishna Mirle AchutaRao. On his faculty name page he explained a familiar South Indian naming path: given name Krishna; initials M (ancestral village Mirle) and A (from his father's name); then expansion into a Western first-middle-last pattern that contracted the two-part last name Achuta Rao into AchutaRao for computer systems. He asked colleagues to keep that closed spelling in publications.
Education and early career mixed engineering, mathematics, and climate. In June 1986 he completed a B.Engg (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering and an M.Sc (Hons) in Mathematics at BITS Pilani (masters thesis on associative rings). He moved to Tulane University in New Orleans: M.Engg in Mechanical Engineering (May 1990), then a Ph.D. in December 1994. His dissertation was "An Investigation of Natural Climate Variability, Sensitivity and Poleward Transport using the COADS Data Set." Between graduate work and full-time climate research he also worked as an imaging and computer vision specialist at Laitram Corporation in Harahan, Louisiana (1993-1998), while holding research and teaching assistant roles at Tulane.
From May 1998 he joined the Program for Climate Model Diagnosis and Intercomparison (PCMDI) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, first as a postdoctoral research scientist and from October 2000 as a research scientist through May 2007. That PCMDI period placed him at the centre of coupled-model evaluation, ENSO simulation benchmarks, and ocean heat-content studies that fed the IPCC assessment process. A landmark collaboration was the 2005 Science paper with Tim P. Barnett, David W. Pierce and others, "Penetration of Human-Induced Warming into the World's Oceans," which concluded that the multi-decadal ocean warming signal could not be explained by natural internal variability or solar and volcanic forcing alone and was well simulated by anthropogenically forced models.
He returned to India in 2007 to join IIT Delhi's Centre for Atmospheric Sciences (CAS): Associate Professor from June 2007, Professor from November 2019. Over nearly two decades he served as Head of CAS and, per his biosketch, as Dean (Faculty) from November 2022 to June 2025. Ambuj Sagar (School of Public Policy, IIT Delhi) told HT that AchutaRao helped pioneer the institute's Centre of Excellence on Climate Adaptation, shifting from global-scale detection work toward regional risks across India. He was also associate faculty at IIT Delhi's School of Public Policy.
Internationally he was tightly woven into the IPCC and WCRP systems. He contributed to IPCC WG-I from the Third Assessment onward (contributing author roles noted for TAR and AR4), was a lead author on AR5 WG-I Chapter 10 (Detection and Attribution of Climate Change: from Global to Regional), and a lead author on AR6 WG-I Chapter 3, with contributing authorship on the Summary for Policymakers. He sat on the CLIVAR Scientific Steering Group (2015-2019) and joined the WCRP Joint Scientific Committee from 1 January 2025 as India liaison for CLIVAR. Advisory roles included research panels for IITM Pune and NCMRWF, the HAPPI steering committee, and the editorial advisory board of Elsevier's Climate Risk Management.
After returning home, his group's work made human influence on Indian climate tangible: detectable anthropogenic signals in sub-regional surface air temperature, heat-wave risk under 1.5C and 2C warmer worlds, attribution of extreme rainfall and monsoon-linked hazards, and World Weather Attribution collaborations on South Asian heat and Pakistan flooding. Colleagues told The Hindu and HT that he also began applying AI tools to climate and monsoon questions, while remaining a quality-over-quantity scientist (Somnath Baidya Roy) and a clear communicator for journalists and policymakers (Anjal Prakash). Roxy Mathew Koll remembered him as a principled defender of scientific temper and a warm friend with humour. Former MoES secretary Madhavan Rajeevan highlighted his heat-wave attribution and AI-monsoon work. Students such as Dileepkumar R. and Chaithra S T described a supervisor who refused to spoon-feed and insisted on independent critical questions.
He wrote for public audiences as well: a Hindustan Times Next "Earth Signs" column series for schools; a LiveMint opinion warning against an "intergenerational Ponzi scheme" that loads climate costs onto children; Carbon Brief and media explainers on aerosols, irrigation, and masked heat extremes; and frequent TV and podcast appearances around the AR6 release. He remained active in teaching and research until shortly before his death. IIT Delhi's public condolence stressed nearly two decades of service and the Centre of Excellence for Climate Change Adaptation. His passing was widely framed as a major loss to Indian climate science.
