In their own words

I took two shots and asked him to act spontaneously. It took about an hour and a half, but I saw depth in his eyes, a certain expression, and potential. That's how his journey started.

Kuku Kohli on casting Ajay Devgn after a tested Akshay Kumar could not give bulk dates. ETimes, reported by Times of India and Hindustan Times.

Then, I saw Ajay's picture in his dad's office. He was called Raju then. I asked his dad if he wants to become a hero. I auditioned Ajay and he oozed confidence; he rattled off quite a few dialogues of Zanjeer in the audition.

He came up under Raj Kapoor and then gave so many actors their start. That kindness in the industry, passing it on, that's what we'll miss. A life well spent in cinema.

A man of principle and craft. The work speaks for itself across four decades. He believed in introducing new talent when others would not take the risk. That says something about his character.

Phool Aur Kaante changed everything for Ajay Devgn and honestly for Hindi cinema too. That bike entry still hits different. Kuku Kohli took a real chance on a newcomer and it paid off in the best way.

Early life

Avtar Kohli, known professionally as Kuku Kohli, was born on 4 June 1949 in Peshawar. English Wikipedia, Times of India and Wikidata agree on that date and place. Details of his childhood, schooling and any move from Peshawar after Partition are not made public in the obituaries and reference pages used for this profile. What later accounts emphasise is not a school record but a long early working life under Raj Kapoor, the place where he said he learned the craft.

Education

Formal education is not made public. No school, college or diploma is named on English Wikipedia, IMDb or the major 2026 obituaries. His documented training was on set. He assisted Raj Kapoor for years, including on Bobby, Satyam Shivam Sundaram and Prem Rog, and later worked as second-unit director on Betaab and Arjun. Classroom education is treated as not made…

Career and discovery

Kohli's credited film work begins in the 1970s as an assistant. The leap to director came in 1991. Kohraam, starring Dharmendra, opened on 18 October 1991. Phool Aur Kaante, released on 22 November 1991, is the film that made his name. He has said he needed a newcomer because he was getting his own break, that Akshay Kumar had been…

Personal life

Kohli's first marriage was to Rita Kohli. IMDb also lists the name as Ritu. They had two daughters, producer Pooja Kohli and filmmaker Karishma Kohli. In 1990 he married actress Aruna Irani. They had no children. Irani has said the marriage was kept quiet for years because he was already married, and that she did not want a child to…

Beliefs and views

Kohli did not publish a political manifesto. What he said in interviews was about how Hindi films get made. He believed a director's break and a new actor's break could be the same gamble, and he said not everyone was willing to introduce newcomers. On Yeh Dil Aashiqanaa he argued there was no great change in that duty: you still…

Legacy and impact

His lasting public credit is the launch of Ajay Devgn in Phool Aur Kaante, including the motorcycle entry that trailers still quote. He also helped carry the 1990s action-and-family style through Suhaag, Haqeeqat, Zulmi and Anari No. 1, and he gave Nadeem-Shravan a later commercial outing on Yeh Dil Aashiqanaa. Haqeeqat is the film for which he was nominated as…

Awards and honours

No major competitive win is documented in the sources used here. For Haqeeqat (1995) the film was nominated in seven Filmfare categories, including Best Director for Kohli, and he was also nominated for Best Director at the Screen Awards. Those nominations are not converted into wins. Association office is separate: he was general secretary of the Indian Film and Television…

Controversies

The documented personal controversy is the relationship and 1990 marriage to Aruna Irani while he was already married to Rita Kohli, and the years in which that second marriage was not publicly discussed. Irani rejected a simple homebreaker story and has said she knew his first family came to the sets. Kohli treated the affair as something that happened in…

Death

On the night of 24 August 2026 Kohli felt restless and suffered a mild heart attack. He was admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai and underwent angioplasty. On 25 August, around 5:15 pm, he suffered a massive cardiac arrest and died. He was 77. Aruna Irani's spokesperson confirmed the sequence to Times of India and said his last words to her included "Let's not go overboard." Ashoke Pandit described it as a massive heart attack with no prior illness. The body was taken from the Andheri West home and cremated on 26 August 2026 at Oshiwara Crematorium. A prayer meet followed on 29 August at Celebration Sports Club, Andheri West. Any disposition of ashes after cremation is not made public.
