Laureano Leone

Laureano Leone was born in Rocca Pia, Abruzzo, Italy, on 11 September 1928. After local schooling and studies with the Pia Societa San Paolo in Rome, he earned a classical diploma at the Liceo Classico Ovidio in Sulmona. In 1951 a scholarship took him to the United States. He studied at Gannon College in Erie and graduated in pharmacy from the Detroit Institute of Technology in 1956 with top marks, a gold medal and the Kappa Psi Academic Key. He began his professional life in Michigan before moving to Toronto in 1967 with his wife Elisa and their daughter Maia Berta.

In Ontario Leone passed the provincial pharmacy exams and built a large health-care business that, in the 1970s, included five pharmacies, four laboratories and a clinic. He became a leading figure in Italian Canadian organisations as president of the National Congress of Italian Canadians and of the Canadian Ethnocultural Council, and served as vice-chair of the Ontario Place Corporation. He received Toronto's Gold Medal of Merit for community involvement and was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada, invested in 1982.

As a Liberal he contested Etobicoke in the 1981 Ontario election, finishing third, then won Downsview in 1987 by 174 votes. He served as a government backbencher under Premier David Peterson until the Liberals lost power in 1990 and he was defeated by New Democrat Anthony Perruzza. After returning to Italy he opened Canada's honorary consulate in Sulmona in 2005, covering Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise, later extended to the Marche.

Leone married Elisa and they had a daughter, Maia Berta. The family settled in Toronto in 1967. In later life he returned to Abruzzo, remaining closely tied to Rocca Pia and Sulmona through honorary consular work and local relationships. Friends and former mayors described him as an emblem of Abruzzese emigration: ambitious, institution-minded and loyal to the communities he left and those he joined.

Leone died on 15 September 2026 at the age of 98 at the Unisanitas residence in Castel di Sangro, Italy, according to Abruzzo reporting. His funeral was celebrated at the church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rocca Pia. English Wikipedia and Italian regional coverage recorded the death; a detailed public medical cause was not emphasised in those accounts.

Leone left a record that linked pharmacy entrepreneurship, Italian Canadian advocacy, Ontario Liberal politics and Canada-Italy diplomacy. His Order of Canada appointment recognised community leadership long before his brief term as Downsview MPP. In Abruzzo he is remembered as the emigrant who became honorary consul in Sulmona and kept institutional doors open between Canada and central Italy. Former local mayors praised his intelligence, persistence and dedication to the common good.
