Liu Yandong was a Chinese politician who rose from the Communist Youth League to become one of the most senior women in the history of the People's Republic of China. She served as Vice Premier from 2013 to 2018, sat on the Politburo of the Chinese Communist Party from 2007 to 2017, and earlier led the party's United Front Work Department. She died in Beijing on 28 October 2026, aged 80.

Liu was born in November 1945 in Jiangsu province, into a family from Nantong. Her father, Liu Ruilong, had been one of the founders of the 14th Red Army, an early Communist force, and some analysts later counted her among the princelings, the children of revolutionary veterans. She entered Tsinghua University in 1964, came through the Cultural Revolution there, and graduated in chemical engineering in 1970, having worked as a part-time political instructor while a student.

After graduation she worked at chemical plants in Tangshan and Beijing. In 1980 she moved into party work in Beijing and in 1981 became deputy party secretary of Chaoyang District. From 1982 she spent nine years at the Communist Youth League, rising to its secretariat and serving as chair of the All-China Youth Federation, alongside Wang Zhaoguo, Hu Jintao and Song Defu. Her long association with Hu Jintao, a fellow Tsinghua graduate, led commentators to place her in the so-called Youth League faction.

In 1991 she joined the United Front Work Department, which manages the party's relations with non-Communist groups, and while serving there earned master's and doctoral degrees from Renmin University and Jilin University. She headed the department from 2002 to 2007 and became a vice chair of the national political advisory body, the CPPCC, in 2003. In 2007 she entered the 17th Politburo, then the only woman on it, and in 2008 became a State Councilor and a vice chair of the Beijing Olympic organising committee. Re-elected to the Politburo in 2012, she became the second woman after Deng Yingchao to serve consecutive terms, and in 2013 was named Vice Premier under Li Keqiang, overseeing education, health and sport. She retired in 2018 and later led the International Confucian Association.

Xinhua announced that Liu died of illness at 14:53 on 28 October 2026 in Beijing, describing her as an outstanding leader of the party's united front work and of China's education, science, health, and women and children's work.

My mom called me the second this hit the news, she kept saying 80 years old like she couldn't believe it. I only knew the name from a clip of her meeting with some education summit years back but my mom lit up talking about what she did for women in government over there.

Re-elected to the 18th Politburo in 2012, she was the second woman after Deng Yingchao to serve consecutive Politburo terms. In March 2013 she was appointed Vice Premier in the government of Li Keqiang, the fourth woman to hold the post, with responsibility for education, health and sport. She also led the State Council's leading group on health care reform and, from 2015, the leading group for Chinese football reform. She stepped down from the Politburo in 2017 and retired as Vice Premier in March 2018. In November 2019 she became president of the International Confucian Association.
