Niamh O'Brien, known since her marriage as Niamh Flatley, was an Irish dancer best remembered for originating the lead female role of Saoirse in Michael Flatley's Lord of the Dance. Born and raised in County Meath, she began Irish dancing at the age of three and competed at the highest level of the sport, reaching the world championships before turning to professional stage work. She went on to perform in several of Flatley's major productions, including Riverdance, Lord of the Dance, Feet of Flames and Celtic Tiger, becoming one of the defining dancers of the Irish dance shows that carried the tradition to audiences around the world.
O'Brien met Michael Flatley while working on Riverdance, though their relationship did not begin until 2006. They married that year at St Patrick's Church in Fermoy, County Cork, and their son, Michael St James, was born in 2007. Beyond her own performing career, O'Brien was known as a steady and private presence alongside one of Irish dance's most famous and flamboyant stars, and she remained closely involved in the Lord of the Dance company and its charitable events, including Christmas parties the couple hosted for children from Barnardo's centres in Cork.
O'Brien's public profile grew in a different way in recent years when Flatley spoke about her role supporting him through his treatment for an aggressive cancer, first disclosed in January 2023. He described waking from the depths of his illness to find her at his side, crediting her devotion as central to his recovery, which went into remission. Friends of the family have said that Flatley in turn spent long stretches caring for her as her own health declined.
Niamh O'Brien died on 5 October 2026 at Beacon Hospital in Dublin, at the age of 52. According to a representative for the family, she passed away peacefully following a period of illness, only hours before she had been due to be flown to the United States for specialist treatment. Michael Flatley announced her death in a statement posted to Instagram, writing that his heart was broken and that he had lost his wife of twenty years and his best friend. The Flatley and O'Brien families thanked the doctors, nurses and staff at Beacon Hospital who had cared for her, and asked for privacy as they grieved.
Tributes followed quickly from across the worlds of Irish dance and entertainment, with friends describing Flatley as devastated and distraught at the loss of a woman he called the most loving mother, wife and person. The exact nature of her illness and the specific cause of death have not been made public, and the family has not indicated whether a public funeral or memorial service is planned, asking instead that their privacy be respected at this time.
