Nicholas Hugh Glennie-Smith was born in London on 3 October 1951. Long before his name sat above Hollywood action and period scores, he was a working keyboard player in British progressive rock and pop. In 1975 he joined the band Wally, contributing keyboards on their album Valley Gardens. Through the late 1970s and 1980s he built a dense session and touring resume: Leo Sayer's Living in a Fantasy (1980); multiple Cliff Richard albums and tours (I'm No Hero, Wired for Sound, The Rock Connection); Roger Daltrey solo records; Paul McCartney's Press to Play (1986) and Flowers in the Dirt (1989); and work with Phil Collins, Tina Turner, Elvis Costello, Nik Kershaw, Duane Eddy, Katrina and the Waves (including organ on the hit "Walking on Sunshine," later noted by ASCAP), and others. He collaborated with Roger Waters on the When the Wind Blows score and Radio K.A.O.S., and performed as a keyboardist at Waters's 1990 The Wall concert in Berlin. In 1987 he co-created the album Transmissions under the group name Gentlemen Without Weapons with Vic Coppersmith-Heaven and Kenny Young. That pop-and-rock decade trained the practical skills (timing, arrangement sense, gear fluency) he later poured into film.
Late in the 1980s Glennie-Smith connected first with Stanley Myers and then with Hans Zimmer's Media Ventures studio, relocating from the UK to Los Angeles. He became a core member of what became Remote Control Productions: contributing additional music, keyboards, arrangements, orchestrations, and conducting on films including K2, Cool Runnings, The House of the Spirits, The Lion King, Bad Boys, Crimson Tide, and Beyond Rangoon. Colleagues later stressed that his mix of orchestral craft, electronic programming, and bandstand experience made him unusually suited to the emerging Media Ventures hybrid sound. In a 2016 Film.Music.Media interview he spoke warmly about early friendships with peers such as Richard Harvey and Mark Mancina, and about the trust that grew inside Zimmer's collaborative circle.
His breakthrough as a named composer came with Michael Bay's The Rock (1996), sharing principal composing duties with Zimmer and Harry Gregson-Williams. The score's massed brass, pounding percussion, synthesizers, and heroic themes became a template for late-1990s and 2000s Hollywood action music, even as later commentary sometimes debated how writing credit was divided on that crowded schedule. He followed with Fire Down Below and Home Alone 3 (1997), then one of his most admired solo statements, Randall Wallace's The Man in the Iron Mask (1998), a sweeping romantic-tragic adventure score that later composers still cite with affection. The same year he scored Disney's direct-to-video The Lion King II: Simba's Pride, showing a warmer lyrical register. Reunions with Wallace yielded We Were Soldiers (2002), often cited as his most emotionally powerful work (orchestra, chorus, and ethnic colors balancing martial force and elegy), Secretariat (2010), and Heaven Is for Real (2014). Other composing credits included Highlander: Endgame, the TV epic Attila, Ella Enchanted, A Sound of Thunder, Children of Glory, and extensive music for the French historical theme park Puy du Fou, heard by hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.
Equally important was his life on the podium. He conducted major Zimmer-adjacent scores across the Pirates of the Caribbean and Transformers series, The Simpsons Movie, X-Men: First Class, Rango, and many others, and served as musical director for Hans Zimmer's live concert tours, where audiences saw him as keyboardist, accordionist, and band leader as much as studio craftsman. In 2012 he conducted the 60-piece orchestra at the Academy Awards ceremony featuring music associated with Zimmer and Pharrell Williams. Industry memorials repeatedly called him a musician's musician: versatile, generous, wry, and able to make enormous forces sound both powerful and human. The Society of Composers & Lyricists remembered "the consummate English gentleman" whose presence lifted a room.
Glennie-Smith married Jan; by 2026 they had been married 52 years. They had four children, including composer and music editor Seth Glennie-Smith (credits later including Project Hail Mary and It Ends With Us), plus Joss, Haley, and Katharine. He died peacefully on 16 August 2026 at home in Charlottesville, Virginia, surrounded by family. He was 74. No cause of death was revealed publicly, though music-trade memorials noted a period of ill-health. Hans Zimmer Live remembered him as a trusted creative partner, band member, and longtime friend, and closed: "He will always be the leader of our band." ASCAP, SCL, APM/KPM, Puy du Fou, and fellow composers added their own farewells, underscoring a career that bridged British rock rooms, Hollywood scoring stages, and live arenas without losing its human center.
