56 years old. Shot dead on a riverbank. That is just a hard, ugly fact to sit with over coffee this morning. Lord keep whatever family he has left, even strangers like me don't know their names to pray for them proper.

Paul "Bosco" O'Connor was a 56 year old man from the Ballyphehane area of Cork city whose name became widely known only in the days after his violent death in October 2026. He had previously been a figure known to gardai rather than to the wider public: reporting on his killing described him as a suspected member of a notorious armed robbery gang that stole from homes and businesses at gunpoint in the 1990s and 2000s.
By the time of his death, his life had taken a markedly different turn. He was known for abusing drugs for many years but his life had reportedly "fallen apart" before his death and that he was using drugs quite heavily, and it is suspected that he was a drug user rather than a major drug supplier when investigators looked at whether the killing was connected to a debt.
O'Connor was found dead on the afternoon of 15 October 2026, on the banks of the River Blackwater at Ballyellis, on the outskirts of Mallow. He was from the Ballyphehane area of Cork city and had suffered gunshot wounds. He may have been shot at very close range. Paul 'Bosco' O'Connor found dead by banks of Blackwater river at Ballyellis by a man walking his dog.
Investigators later came to believe he was shot while trying to retrieve stolen drugs for a gang, and gardai recovered a gun that they believe was used to murder him, sending it for ballistic examination in an attempt to determine if it could be forensically linked to the killing, with a quantity of cocaine found at the same location.
The Garda investigation moved quickly. A man, who is in his 30s, was arrested under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act and could be held for a maximum of seven days, and a woman in her forties was separately arrested and released without charge, with a file prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions. A man has been charged in connection with the death of Paul "Bosco" O'Connor, and he was due to appear before a special sitting of Fermoy District Court.
In a death notice posted on RIP.ie, O'Connor's family said he is deeply mourned by his brother Terry, sisters Mary and Valerie and extended family, and reports said the family planned to hold his funeral privately. His death, and the fast moving investigation that followed, left his family grieving a man whose life had been marked in equal measure by a troubled past and, in his final years, by addiction.
