Paweł Socha was a Polish Roman Catholic bishop, a member of the Congregation of the Mission (the Vincentians) and a theologian who served as auxiliary bishop of Gorzów, later Zielona Góra and Gorzów, for almost four decades. He died on 29 October 2026, aged 91.

He was born on 10 January 1935 in Wojsławice near Radom. In 1951 he joined the Congregation of the Mission, the religious community founded by Saint Vincent de Paul, and took his perpetual vows in 1956. After studying philosophy and theology at the Vincentian institute in Kraków, he was ordained a priest on 22 May 1958 by Archbishop Eugeniusz Baziak in the Vincentian church at Stradom in Kraków.

After a year as a curate in Żagań, he studied fundamental theology at the Catholic University of Lublin, where he later earned a doctorate in 1969 with a dissertation on the idea of Tradition in the Second Vatican Council's constitution Dei Verbum. From 1962 he taught fundamental and dogmatic theology at the seminary in Gościkowo Paradyż, where he also served as prefect, spiritual director and, from 1975 to 1978, rector.

In November 1973 Pope Paul VI named him auxiliary bishop of the newly created Diocese of Gorzów, with the titular see of Tunigaba. He was consecrated on 26 December 1973 in Gorzów Cathedral by Cardinal Karol Wojtyła, the future Pope John Paul II, and took as his motto Facere veritatem in caritate, "To do the truth in love". He served alongside four diocesan bishops, Wilhelm Pluta, Józef Michalik, Adam Dyczkowski and Stefan Regmunt, was vicar general for many years and twice ran the diocese as administrator, in 1986 and 1993.

In the Polish Episcopal Conference he chaired the Commission for the Clergy from 1980 to 1996 and sat on commissions for seminaries, general and academic ministry, and Poles abroad. He was national director of the Apostolic Union of Clergy, and in 1990 he took part in the Synod of Bishops in Rome on priestly formation. He was widely valued as a retreat leader and preacher.

Pope Benedict XVI accepted his resignation on 16 January 2012, when he was 77, but he continued to visit parishes and confer confirmation in retirement. In March 2026 he addressed the bishops' plenary meeting in Warsaw, urging a move away from ministry driven by planning, activism and statistics towards listening together to God. He received the Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta in 2018 and the Officer's Cross in 2024. His death was announced by the Diocese of Zielona Góra and Gorzów, which said funeral details would follow.

My grandmother called from home to tell me, she said he was one of the last bishops Karol Wojtyła consecrated before he became Pope John Paul II. Almost 53 years as a bishop. That is a long history to hold.

In 2023 he marked 50 years as a bishop and 65 years as a priest.

On 11 March 2026, at the bishops' plenary meeting in Warsaw during the 400th anniversary of the Basilica of the Holy Cross, he called on the bishops to move from ministry marked by constant planning, activism and attention to numbers, statistics and measurable success towards listening together to what God says. He had also said that the response to abuse scandals in the Church required truth, justice and purification, and that conversion of hearts was needed more than structural reform.
