Peter Johns

Peter Johns was a New Zealand local government politician who represented the South Tararua Ward, including his home town of Woodville, on the Tararua District Council. On 21 September 2026 the council announced that it was deeply saddened by his tragic passing, and tributes followed from Mayor Scott Gilmore and colleagues across the district.

Johns had lived in the Tararua district for more than four decades and served about fifteen years on council over several terms. He lost his seat after an early term, then returned via a South Ward byelection in 2015 and kept winning thereafter, including a fifth term after the 2025 local elections. He was closely identified with Woodville, arguing that the southern towns of Woodville, Pahiatua and Eketahuna each needed a direct voice at the council table.

As a councillor he pressed for urgency on Woodville's long running water and infrastructure problems, backed careful handling of water reforms that would pool services with neighbouring councils, and argued for housing and rezoning so the district could meet growing demand for sections. Colleagues remembered the manner of his advocacy as much as any single project. Mayor Scott Gilmore said Johns had become much more than a valued colleague and was also a good friend, adding that council meetings would not feel the same without him.
