Peter Tyoakaa Orshi

Pastor Peter Tyoakaa Orshi was a Nigerian clergyman from Benue State and a son of one of the Tiv nation's most prominent traditional houses. He died on 24 September 2026 at the age of 60, after what his family described as a brief illness. He was a son of the late Orchivirigh Dr James Akperan Orshi, who reigned as the third Tor Tiv, the paramount traditional ruler of the Tiv people, which placed Peter within a family line known across Benue for traditional authority and public standing.

Orshi was known within his community as a pastor and family man rather than as a national public office holder. Those who spoke of him after his death emphasised pastoral care, kinship and a quiet public profile. He was married to Nancy Nguveren Orshi, a Deputy Director with Radio Benue and a National Trustee of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, and the couple had six children. Relatives and associates in Buruku Local Government Area and beyond described him as a devoted son, husband, father and uncle who was widely loved by family and friends.

His death was announced by the Orshi family of Mbatiev, Mbapen, Tombu, in Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State, in a statement signed by Barrister David Demnomgu Orshi. Leadership Newspapers published the family notice, which expressed deep sorrow while affirming total submission to the will of God, language that reflected both Christian faith in the region and Orshi's own vocation as a pastor. In the days that followed, condolences from the Positive Impact for Women and Youth Development Initiative and from the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists to Nancy Orshi showed how the loss was felt across her professional networks, even when some statements named her without repeating his full name.

No public cause of death beyond a brief illness was disclosed, and the family did not release further medical detail. Funeral arrangements published with the family statement set services across Makurdi and Tse-Kur Baka in Benue State, including a service of songs, the movement of the body from Bishop Murray Medical Centre in Makurdi toward Tse-Kur Baka for a wake, and a final burial service on 9 October 2026 after a morning church service. The family invited relatives, friends, colleagues and well-wishers to join them in mourning and in celebrating his life, and thanked those who had already supported them.
