Pietro Soddu

Pietro Luigi Maria Soddu, widely known in Sardinia as Pietrino Soddu, was one of the defining Christian Democratic politicians of postwar Sardinia. Born on 19 June 1929 in Benetutti, in the province of Sassari, into a family of artisans and shepherds, he trained as a lawyer and worked in the regional health service before entering public life. He died in Sassari on 16 September 2026 at the age of 97.

Soddu belonged to the generation of Sardinian Christian Democrats sometimes called the giovani turchi. He became mayor of Benetutti in 1952, then a provincial councillor and assessor in Sassari from 1956. From 1961 to 1983 he sat on the Sardinian Regional Council for five legislatures and held regional assessor posts covering Reconstruction (Rinascita), Industry, and Health. Between 1972 and 1980 he was elected president of the Region of Sardinia seven times, though he chaired three regional juntas: briefly in 1972, again from 1976 to 1979, and once more in 1980. That pattern of short successive elections reflected the unstable coalition politics of the island in those decades.

In 1983 he entered the Italian Chamber of Deputies for Christian Democracy and held the seat through the Ninth, Tenth, and Eleventh Legislatures until 1994, serving eleven years in Rome alongside his long regional career. After the collapse of the First Republic and the dissolution of the DC amid Tangentopoli and the Andreotti trials, he joined the Italian People's Party. From 1995 to 2000 he served as president of the Province of Sassari for a centre left coalition, losing a runoff to Franco Masala in 2000. Later he returned to local politics in Benetutti and promoted Democrazia Federale, remaining closely tied to questions of Sardinian autonomy and federalism.

Away from office he built the Piccolo Atlante della Sardegna, the Soddu Tanda Collection of about one hundred works by Sardinian and other artists, which he donated to the Comune of Benetutti in the early 2000s. From 2004 to 2010 he sat on the board of the Stazione dell'arte museum in Ulassai. Italian and Sardinian institutions remembered him as a historic DC figure who linked regional autonomy to national politics across more than half a century of public life, from the village mayor's desk to the Quirinale and regional presidency.
