Reginald Horace "Reggie" Bannister was born on 29 September 1945 in Long Beach, California. Drawn early to music, he became a founding member of The Greenwood County Singers alongside music legend Van Dyke Parks. Still in his teens, the popular folk group toured until Bannister received his draft notice and served a tour of duty in the Vietnam War. He later said he opposed the war but refused to flee to Canada, choosing instead to meet the draft head-on: he served as head radio operator for an automatic weapons specialty group. Exposure to heavy-caliber weapons left him with hearing loss as a service-connected disabled veteran; he was also exposed to Agent Orange. After returning, he used the G.I. Bill to study acting and threw himself into music and film, determined, as Don Coscarelli later wrote, to pursue a life of peace and creativity.
Coscarelli first met Bannister when the director was 18 and deep into his first feature, Jim, the World's Greatest. Bannister invited Coscarelli and producer Paul Pepperman to the Wooden Keg, a Long Beach dive bar, where Reggie was performing guitar and vocals. After the set he toasted them with four words: "Count me in, boys!" That night began a lifelong collaboration. Bannister appeared in Coscarelli's early films (Jim, the World's Greatest; Kenny & Company), then as ice-cream man Reggie in Phantasm (1979). Only Bannister, Coscarelli argued, could turn a simple vendor-sidekick into an unlikely action hero for the ages: shotgun, chainsaw, guitar, and unwavering loyalty to friends Mike and Jody against the Tall Man (Angus Scrimm). He reprised Reggie across Phantasm II (1988), Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead (1993), Phantasm IV: Oblivion (1998), and Phantasm: Ravager (2016), becoming a convention-circuit favorite often dubbed the hardest-working man in horror. He composed "Have You Seen It" for Oblivion and arranged "Sittin' Here at Midnight" with Bill Thornbury for the original film.
Beyond the franchise he worked with Ossie Davis, Bruce Campbell, and Andy Griffith, among others. Notable credits include Wishmaster (1997), a memorable improvised scarab-beetle argument with Campbell in Coscarelli's Bubba Ho-Tep (2002), Silent Night, Deadly Night 4: Initiation, Survival Quest, and dozens of independents. He co-produced the Salem's Lot short-film sequel One for the Road (as Herb Tooklander) and, with wife Gigi, co-writer Shelby McIntyre, and director Vito Trabucco, made the comedy-horror Bloody Bloody Bible Camp (2012). He also released multiple albums spanning rock, folk, and country, and with Gigi ran Production Magic Inc., producing live events, music, and film projects.
Bannister married Susan McDonald Akalski (1981; divorced 1987), then Gayle Bannister (1988; divorced 1997). Introduced by actor Michael Berryman in 1995, he married Gigi Fast Elk Porter in 2001. He is survived by Gigi and his daughter Ellen; he was predeceased by father Horace, mother Evelyn, and brother Ronald. The couple lived in a Crestline mountain cabin. In 2016 he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease (USA TODAY: vascular dementia associated with Parkinson's); by February 2024 the condition had progressed to Lewy body dementia. Hospice care at home was announced on 21 February 2025 after a collapse and VA hospital stay. On the early morning of 9 August 2026, Gigi last checked on him around 3:45 a.m.; around 6:00 a.m. their cat GG alerted her, and she found Reggie gone, looking quiet and peaceful in their mountain home. He was 80. Coscarelli's tribute closed: "Yes, Reg, to me and your legion of fans, you'll always be Hot as Love." Visitation and funeral services were held 5 September 2026 at Montecito Memorial Park and Mortuary (Cypress Chapel, Loma Linda), with committal at Montecito Memorial Park / Montecito Mausoleum, Colton, California.
