In their own words

Budeme si muset najít nového trombonistu, aby odpovídal výkonnostně - i lidsky do kapely zapadl. Honza byl v zákulisí i na jevišti skvělý bavič.

ČTK interview around his 80th birthday (2025-12-25), on trombonist Jan Šatra

Bráli jsme ten koncert spíše jako oslavu výročí Yo Yo Bandu. V mém věku by se už nemělo slavit půl roku dopředu, člověk nikdy neví.

My father played Karviná constantly when I was growing up in the seventies. Didn't know until later it was written as a song about a place. Richard made poetry out of Czech geography. That's a gift.

Self-taught musician who built something real out of nothing. That takes character.

His son Štěpán was an athlete too. Something about that family - they didn't just talk about doing things. They did them. A son worthy of that father, I'd say.

Fifty years leading a band through every change in music and politics and still playing for audiences who loved them. The dedication alone deserves our respect. Condolences to Kateřina and his family.

Heard Yo Yo Band open for UB40 back in '88. Richard's voice caught me off guard. Didn't know reggae had a Czech accent till that night. RIP to a real pioneer.

Richard Tesařík brought reggae to a corner of Europe that had no reason to expect it, and made it sing. A pioneer and a gentleman.

He turned toponyms into art. Not many songwriters think to do that, and fewer do it this well.

Ostrava birth, Hanspaulka childhood, athlete before singer

Born 1945-12-25 in Ostrava into the family of war hero Gen. Richard Tesařík. Grew up with music (opera-chorus grandmother) and sport; athletic youth; secondary school in Prague (Velvarská / Evropská); failed FTVS entrance exams; military service with tanks. Family associated with Prague Hanspaulka officer housing, the scene that later fed Yo Yo Band.

Self-taught musician, not a conservatory product

No conservatory training; largely self-taught. Completed SVVŠ. Attempted Faculty of Physical Education and Sport (FTVS) unsuccessfully. Musical schooling came from family singing, amateur practice, National Theatre stagehand years, and band apprenticeship.

Yo Yo Band, reggae pioneer, hits and theatre

Co-founded Yo Yo Band 1975 with Vladimír Tesařík, Ondřej Hejma, Julius Novotný-Kuzma; public launch Slánské jazzové dny Nov 1975; gospel/soul to reggae/Latin/pop; UB40 support 1988; hits Kladno, Karviná, Rybitví, Jedem do Afriky, Jó já jsem srab; Karviná platinum and three 1994 Anděl/Grammy awards; continued as bandleader after Vladimír 2003; Kalich musicals; cameos in Pelíšky and Musíme si pomáhat; 50th anniversary…

Brother, marriage, athlete son, privacy at the end

Married; wife Kateřina Tesaříková appears with him in CT 13. komnata Richarda Tesaříka (2009). Son Štěpán Tesařík is a former Czech 400 m hurdles representative. Richard spoke about grandchildren in interviews. Brother Vladimír (b. Svitavy 1947) was his closest musical partner until 2003. Death place and funeral not yet public.

Dark humour, family history, stage first

Spoke with black humour about history (Nebýt Hitlera, nebyl bych tu, tying his parents wartime meeting to his own birth). Recalled his father Hero of the USSR status as both shield and burden. Preferred performing to solemn anniversary retrospectives; in 2025 said he would keep going while audiences still enjoyed the band. No major political manifesto beyond that personal, ironic…

Reggae on Czech radio and place-name pop forever

Helped pioneer reggae, ska and related Black music styles in Czechoslovakia/Czechia; turned toponyms into national singalongs; Karviná remains a 1990s benchmark; honorary citizenship of Rybitví (2007); fifty-year touring career.

Anděl/Grammy sweep, platinum, Slavík, Rybitví citizenship

1994 Czech Grammy / Anděl: Composition of the Year (Rybitví), Album of the Year (Karviná), Band of the Year. Platinum certification for Karviná (~130,000 copies; some reports ~150,000). 2007: 4th place Český slavík (band). 2007: Honorary citizenship of Rybitví (with brother Vladimír).

None major documented for the singer

No significant personal scandal established in mainstream obituaries. Father postwar military conflicts are historical context, not controversies about Richard the singer.
