Robert Wolk was one of South Africa's most complete circuit racers of his generation, a multiple national champion whose career stretched from karting in the 1990s to touring cars and hillclimbs in the mid-2020s. Robert Wolk was one of South Africa's most complete circuit racers of his generation, a multiple national champion whose career stretched from karting in the 1990s to touring cars and hillclimbs in the mid-2020s. Born on 21 June 1985, he spent nearly three decades winning titles across single-seaters and tin-tops, collecting Junior and later Senior Protea colours along the way. Colleagues and fans knew him as fiercely competitive on track and notably gentle off it.
His racing education began in karting, where he claimed South African Junior GP Karting Championship titles in 1995 and 1997. Formula Ford followed, then a long run of national single-seater success that included the 2013 SA Formula Volkswagen Championship and the 2015 SA Formula 1600 Championship. He later dominated Global Touring Cars with back-to-back SA GTC titles in 2021 and 2022, and in 2024 he added the South African Touring Cars Championship. DriverDB records hundreds of race starts and dozens of wins, a measure of how consistently he raced at the front.
Hillclimbing became another signature chapter. At Simola Hillclimb in Knysna he became a familiar and celebrated figure, taking King of the Hill honours and returning in May 2026 to win the Single Seater, Sports Car and Sports Prototype title again in an Investchem Gould GR55 with a 35.024-second Top 10 Shootout run. That same season he rejoined South African Touring Cars and won at Aldo Scribante in June, still racing at national level and due to compete at Killarney when his life was cut short.
On the evening of Wednesday 16 September 2026, Wolk was shot dead in Esther Park, Kempton Park, after an alleged road-rage confrontation following a low-speed collision involving his Audi and another vehicle. South African Police Service confirmed he was declared dead at the scene on the corner of Camwood Street and Portland Drive; a murder case was opened and no arrests had been announced in early reporting. He was 41.
Motorsport South Africa described a profound void in the sport and praised not only his championships but the passion, commitment and sportsmanship he brought throughout his career. Simola Hillclimb, Extreme Festival organisers and fellow drivers remembered a fierce competitor who remained positive and approachable. Robert Wolk leaves a record of titles spanning karting, formula cars, touring cars and the hill, and a reputation as one of South Africa's most respected racing drivers.
