Ronald Tétrault was a Quebec businessman and politician from Val-d'Or who served as the Ralliement créditiste member of the National Assembly for Abitibi-Est from 1970 to 1973 and later spent twelve years as mayor of his home town. He was born in Val-d'Or on 16 June 1936, the son of…

Ronald Tétrault was a Quebec businessman and politician from Val-d'Or who served as the Ralliement créditiste member of the National Assembly for Abitibi-Est from 1970 to 1973 and later spent twelve years as mayor of his home town.

He was born in Val-d'Or on 16 June 1936, the son of Eliza Jean and Oza Tétrault, a Social Credit politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1968 to 1974. Ronald first worked for a dry cleaning business and then for a mutual fund company, before becoming production manager of Nettoyeur Sigma in Val-d'Or. From 1962 he was president and owner of Entreprises Prospérité, and he also ran the Brunet travel agency in the town.

Politics ran in the family. In 1968 and 1969 he was director general of the Ralliement créditiste for northwestern Quebec, and in the 1970 general election he won Abitibi-Est for the party's new provincial wing. His term coincided with bitter internal divisions in the créditiste caucus, and he was among the members who withdrew support from leader Camil Samson. He was defeated in 1973. In the 1979 federal election he ran for the Liberal Party of Canada in Abitibi and finished second to Armand Caouette.

Tétrault was elected mayor of Val-d'Or in 1976 and served until 1980, then returned to the mayor's chair from 1992 to 2000. His years at city hall were marked by work to protect and showcase the town's mining heritage: the Bourlamaque mining village was classified as a historic site in 1979, and the Cité de l'Or opened in 1995. From 1989 he also directed the riding office of MNA Raymond Savoie.

He was the widower of Estelle Tourigny and was mourned by his stepchildren, grandchildren, brothers and sisters and many friends.

Ronald Tétrault died at the hospital in Val-d'Or on 21 October 2026, aged 90. The National Assembly of Quebec paid tribute to him, and the City of Val-d'Or lowered its flag at city hall to half mast in his memory, saluting his contribution to the town's development. In keeping with his wishes there was no visitation or funeral, and burial was planned at the Golden Valley cemetery in Val-d'Or.
