My daughter watched Seksenler with her grandmother every week. Ergun Plak was family to us. He brought such warmth to that role. We are heartbroken.

I never met him but I read once that he wanted poetry instead of violence in the streets. That stayed with me. What a loss at such a young age.

Only 51. Still working, still teaching, still on screen. Turkish television has lost a real actor.

Early life

Serhat Mustafa Kılıç was born on 8 July 1975 in Ankara. His family roots are in Malatya. Independent Türkçe recounts a crowded, playful childhood in a civil-servant household of limited means, and a mother who sang in a classical Turkish music choir and brought him onstage early. His father hoped for a doctor or engineer path; Kılıç instead chose theatre.

Education

In 1994 he won a scholarship place at Bilkent University School of Music and Performing Arts, Theatre Department, graduating with high honours in 1998. In 2005 he completed a master's in directing at Hacettepe University Ankara State Conservatory and began lecturing in theatre at Erzurum Atatürk University Faculty of Fine Arts. He later framed Okul Serhat Kılıç as a Pearson…

Career: theatre, presenting, film, series, school

Professional stage debut 1998. State Theatre years in Diyarbakır and Erzurum. Istanbul from 2008: Tiyatro Dot, BKM, Istanbul City Theatres (İntiharın Genel Provası, Afife nomination). Series highlights: Seksenler (Ergun Plak, 2012-2016), Söz (Çolak), Ezel, Kuruluş: Osman (Mihael Kosses), Öğretmen, Maraşlı, later Kardelenler and Mehmed: Fetihler Sultanı. Film: Nokta, Veda, Palme d'Or Kış Uykusu (Imam Hamdi). Founded Cats & Dogs (2012)…

Personal life

He was not married in sources used. Girlfriend Özlem Esmergül (writer-editor; credited writer of Kırık Plak) is identified as his partner of several years; she found him and told officers he had lymphoma. Sister Sinem is described as his dearest person and collaborator on the conservatory project. Mother Emel Kılıç died earlier (commonly given as 2018). Father's name not made…

Beliefs and views

Artistic credo emphasized craft over celebrity, Anatolia as the real theatre climate of Turkey, patience in teaching, and replacing street violence with poetry and song. He called himself a comedian/showman in the Danny Kaye sense. On Kış Uykusu he stressed Nuri Bilge Ceylan's precise standards. He argued TV series work and festival cinema are different production economies, not moral hierarchies.

Legacy and impact

Public memory splits across Ergun Plak (mass affection), Imam Hamdi (international prestige cinema), Köse Mihal / Çolak (later series recognition), and the Ankara school/stage as an attempt to widen performance education. Same-day tributes from colleagues and fans circled Seksenler and theatre. His death at 51, still active on TRT and commercial series, prompted major Turkish TV news packages and print…

Awards and honours

20th Sadri Alışık Theatre and Cinema Awards, Selection Committee Special Award (Kış Uykusu). 14th Afife Theatre Awards nomination (İntiharın Genel Provası). 47th SİYAD Awards nomination, Best Supporting Actor (Kış Uykusu). Sahne Ankara theatre venue award (2017). Üstün Akmen Theatre Awards, Comedy Male Actor of the Year for Kırık Plak (2025).

Controversies

No major documented professional scandal in Wikipedia or primary obituaries used. Death-day reporting opened a police investigation as standard for an unexplained home death. Girlfriend's statement of lymphoma circulated widely; some outlets also mentioned bruising without open wounds. Official cause awaited autopsy. Unverified narcotics-at-scene rumours are not treated as fact.

Death

On 5 September 2026, Özlem E. arrived at Kılıç's Nurtepe (Kağıthane, Istanbul) home after no contact since Thursday, found him seated motionless in an armchair, and called 112. She told police he had lymphoma. Crime-scene teams examined the home; colleagues including Eren Vurdem came to the address. The body was transferred to Adli Tıp for autopsy. Age 51. Resting place and funeral details were not fully settled in same-day sources.
