We went to Keneseth Eliyahoo on a stopover in 2016, just wandered in off the street in Fort, and someone there told us Mr Sopher was the one who kept it going. That blue building stuck with me more than anything else from that trip.

Solomon F. Sopher was the chairman of Mumbai's Baghdadi Jewish community and, for decades, the chairman and managing trustee of the Sir Jacob Sassoon and Allied Trusts, the charity network that looks after the Keneseth Eliyahoo and Magen David synagogues in Mumbai and the Ohel David Synagogue in Pune. He was also a trustee of the David Sassoon Fund and served as president of the Council of Indian Jewry, the Indian affiliate of the World Jewish Congress.
The Baghdadi Jews of Mumbai descend from merchants and refugees who arrived from Iraq and other parts of the Middle East from the late 18th century, and the Sassoon family left the city schools, synagogues, a library, a hospital and the Sassoon Dock. By Sopher's time the community had shrunk to a small fraction of its peak, and he became the person who kept its historic buildings open, staffed and in use. He was also a trustee or chairman of the E.E.E. Sassoon High School, the Sassoon Guest House, the David Sassoon Library and the Lady Rachel Sassoon Dispensary.
Sopher was known for welcoming visitors to the synagogues in his care, from Israeli prime ministers including Yitzhak Rabin, Ehud Barak, Ehud Olmert and Benjamin Netanyahu to Indian political leaders and international entertainers. He opened the trusts' charitable work to people of all religions and castes, and he oversaw the restoration of the Keneseth Eliyahoo Synagogue, a collaboration with the JSW Foundation, the Kala Ghoda Association and the World Monuments Fund that was rededicated by Maharashtra Governor Vidyasagar Rao in February 2019. That year he received a Lifetime Achievement Award, which Israel's consulate in Mumbai described as the World Jewish Congress honour for his contribution to Jewish life in India. As recently as March 2026 he led the launch of Namaste Shalom, a monthly magazine on India and Israel relations, at Keneseth Eliyahoo.
Sopher's death was announced on 3 November 2026. Israeli ambassador to India Reuven Azar wrote that he had devoted decades to serving India's Baghdadi Jewish community and that his contribution to India's Jewish heritage would be remembered for generations. Yaniv Revach, Israel's consul general in Mumbai, called him a proud Indian Jew and a devoted guardian of Jewish heritage. His age, the cause of death and funeral arrangements had not been made public.
He is remembered as the steward who kept some of India's oldest synagogues alive for a community that had largely moved abroad, and as a bridge between Mumbai's Jews, their neighbours of every faith, and Israel.
