Sönke Hartlef was a German local politician of the CDU who served as mayor of the Hanseatic city of Stade in Lower Saxony from 2019 until his death in October 2026, just days before his term of office was due to end. Colleagues remembered him as a warm, humorous and level-headed man who was deeply rooted in his home town and above all in its village district of Bützfleth.

He was born in Stade on 4 July 1962. After school he trained as a wholesale and foreign trade merchant in Stade from 1979 to 1982 and then did his military service from 1982 to 1984. Following two further posts in Stade, he joined the building materials firm Berding Beton in Buxtehude in 1992, where he worked as a dispatcher for many years. Alongside his job he gave decades of voluntary service to his community, including 24 years on the board of the sports club TuSV Bützfleth, many of them as its chairman.

Hartlef entered local politics in Bützfleth, joining its local council in 2006 and serving as local mayor (Ortsbürgermeister) from 2010 to 2019. In 2011 he was also elected to the Stade city council. In 2019 he stood for the full-time post of mayor of Stade and won the run-off on 16 June with 55.35 percent of the vote, defeating the SPD incumbent Silvia Nieber. He took office on 14 September 2019, and the Covid-19 pandemic soon confronted his administration with exceptional challenges.

In February 2023 he made public that he had been diagnosed with cancer, declaring that he would remain mayor of Stade "with all my heart". He went through operations and treatment and kept working whenever he could, but for the last year and a half of his term his deputies carried out his duties. In 2024 he announced that he would not stand again.

Sönke Hartlef died peacefully in the night of 19 to 20 October 2026, aged 64, after his long illness. His term would have ended on 31 October. The city flew its flags at half mast at the historic town hall and opened a book of condolence. First City Councillor Lars Kolk and City Councillor Carsten Brokelmann said he had been greatly loved by residents and staff alike, and District Administrator Kai Seefried praised his reliability, warmth and down to earth manner. He was married and had a son.

My mother called from Stade this morning to tell me. She said the flags are at half mast outside the old town hall. I have been gone thirty years and I still felt it.

Same here, my aunt in Bützfleth rang me before I even saw it on the news.
