Ahn Pan-seok was a South Korean television and film director whose nearly four-decade career shaped how Korean dramas portray ordinary love, class pressure, and institutional ambition. Born on 27 November 1961 in Uiryeong, South Gyeongsang Province, he studied English language and literature at Sejong University. As a student cinephile he worked lighting on the 1986 short film In Praise of Idleness with classmates who would also enter Korean film and television.

He joined MBC's drama production division in 1987 and learned the craft as an assistant director on Humble Men (1991) and My Mother's Sea (1993). His official directorial debut came in 1994 with the MBC Best Theater episode Love Greetings. Through the 1990s he directed multiple Best Theater installments and the long-running Partner (1994-1998), then the popular family dramas Roses and Bean Sprouts (1999) and Ajumma (2000-2001). After leaving MBC in 2003 he freelanced, including A Problem at My Younger Brother's House for SBS.

In 2006 he directed his first feature film, Over the Border (also known as South of the Border), a melodrama about a North Korean musician who defects and later re-encounters his past. The film drew respectful reviews but limited box-office returns. Television remained his main stage. Behind the White Tower (2007), adapted from Toyoko Yamasaki's novel, focused on hospital politics around an ambitious surgeon rather than romance. It became a landmark medical drama, earned Ahn the Baeksang Arts Awards Best Television Director prize, and confirmed him as a director who could hold audiences without conventional love-plot scaffolding.

He later co-led JoongAng Media Network's Drama House production company. At JTBC he directed How Long I've Kissed (2012), a precise portrait of a middle-aged woman navigating family expectation and late emotional awakening, and Secret Affair (2014), reuniting him with screenwriter Jung Sung-joo and actress Kim Hee-ae for a story about class hypocrisy and a cross-generational romance. Secret Affair brought him a second Baeksang Best Television Director award. Heard It Through the Grapevine (2015) used black comedy to probe wealth and family power when a privileged son brings home a pregnant girlfriend.

International audiences often met him through Something in the Rain (2018) and One Spring Night (2019), both starring Jung Hae-in and showcasing Ahn's preference for quiet observation over melodrama-by-catastrophe. At a 2018 press conference he said real love could mean writing a biography of each other, and that for someone in love a call from a partner can matter more than news of a distant war. He continued directing into the 2020s with The Midnight Romance in Hagwon (2024) and The Art of Negotiation (2025), and completed Love Doctor (also reported as Romance Expert), scheduled for ENA in October 2026, which became his final work after filming and editing were finished.

Colleagues remembered him as a director who treated actors with care and pushed for psychologically dense storytelling. Baek Ji-yeon, who entered MBC in the same 1987 cohort, called him a wonderful director and a truly good friend. Kim Hye-eun, who worked with him on Secret Affair, wrote that he helped her grow and that she regretted not joining his final project. Kim Hee-ae thanked him for recognizing her acting across How Long I've Kissed and Secret Affair.

Ahn had been treated for lung cancer before he collapsed with a cerebral hemorrhage in late July 2026. He died on 12 August 2026 at age 64. His family asked for private funeral proceedings. He is survived by his wife, Yoon Sook Kim; Korean-language profiles also name a son, Ahn Do-yeong. His dramas remain widely rewatched for their patience with adult emotion and their refusal to treat everyday life as small.
