My father spoke of him during the dark years. Said Camilo was one who wouldn't bend. Glad he lived to see democracy hold.

Camilo Enrique Escalona Medina was a Chilean socialist politician whose life tracked almost every major turn of Chile's late twentieth and early twenty-first century left: the Unidad Popular student movement, Pinochet-era exile and clandestinity, the Concertacion transition, repeated leadership of the Socialist Party (PS), the Senate presidency, and a late return as party secretary general. He was born in Santiago on 15 June 1955 and died in Santiago on 4 September 2026 at Clinica Indisa, aged 71, after an aggressive prostate cancer he had publicly acknowledged in April 2026.
He was the son of Camilo Enrique Escalona Jorquera, a baker and trade unionist in BCN and Spanish Wikipedia accounts, and Berta del Carmen Medina Meneses. He finished secondary school at Liceo No. 6 de Hombres (today Liceo Andres Bello) in San Miguel. At 13, in 1969, he joined the Socialist Youth. In 1972 he was elected president of the Federation of Secondary Students of Santiago (FESES) in a contested Unidad Popular-era race that Spanish Wikipedia records against figures including Andres Allamand (PN). In 1973 he entered the Central Committee of the Socialist Youth.
The military coup of 11 September 1973 made him a wanted teenager. Spanish Wikipedia and his own later interviews describe days of hiding in San Miguel (including with Ricardo Solari), a junta order to report to Defence, and refuge under the political name Sebastian. With help from priest Rafael Maroto he entered the Austrian embassy, received asylum, and went to Vienna in 1974. BCN and English Wikipedia place him in Cuba from 1975 to 1978, then in East Berlin in the German Democratic Republic into the early 1980s. He studied at the Wilhelm Pieck school linked to what is now the University of Rostock, with additional unfinished political-science work in Madrid and an economics course in Moscow noted on Spanish Wikipedia. He returned to Chile clandestinely (he told La Tercera the return was in February 1982; BCN frames Berlin residence until 1983 and clandestine re-entry because legal return was blocked). In 1984 he joined the Socialist Party Political Commission underground, in the PS-Almeyda faction, helping rebuild party structures before the 1988 plebiscite opened the road back to democracy.
After the return to democracy he rose quickly. He was elected vice president of the PS in 1992 and served as party president in successive stretches: 1994-1996 and 1996-1998, again 2001-2003, and 2006-2008 and 2008-2010. He entered the Chamber of Deputies in 1990 for District 27 (El Bosque, La Cisterna, San Ramon), first as an independent on the Concertacion list, then as a Socialist, and was re-elected in 1993. A 1997 Senate bid for Santiago West failed. He returned as deputy for District 46 in the Biobio Region (2002-2006), then won the Senate seat for the 17th Circumscription, Los Lagos Region (2006-2014). On 20 March 2012 he became President of the Senate, the first Socialist in that chair since Salvador Allende decades earlier; BCN and Spanish Wikipedia date the term to 20 March 2013 (English Wikipedia's extension to 2014-03-10 appears incorrect against the congressional record). He lost later Senate bids in Biobio Costa (2013) and Aysen (2017).
His leadership was often controversial as well as consequential. Spanish Wikipedia records blame directed at him after the Concertacion's 2009 presidential defeat and his resignation as PS president on 23 January 2010, when he said he did not fear history's judgment and remained "more socialist than ever." He published political chronicles and fiction, including Una transicion de dos caras, Chile, democracia, concertacion (2003), novels and story collections such as En jaque, El atentado, Cuentos del infierno, Archivo desconocido, and the memoir-essay De Allende a Bachelet: una vida politica (2012). In April 2026 he told La Tercera he was racing to finish memoirs on the little-known 1980s underground reconstruction of left parties.
In private life he married journalist Jimena Tricallota Lopez in a Catholic ceremony in 2009 celebrated by Jesuit Fernando Montes, who later administered the anointing of the sick at Indisa in September 2026. He was the father of one daughter (sources differ on her given name: Natalia Escalona Palma in Spanish Wikipedia; Sofia living in Montevideo in La Tercera September 2026 coverage). He lived in later years in Providencia. Former president Gabriel Boric visited him at the clinic in his final days; cross-party figures including DC president Alvaro Ortiz and PS president Paulina Vodanovic joined vigils while party leaders softly sang La Marsellesa, the PS anthem, outside his room.
Escalona died on 4 September 2026. La Tercera's Quezada/Artaza obituary the following day called him a key man of Chilean socialism; English and Spanish Wikipedia record prostate cancer as the cause. Resting place and funeral arrangements were not yet made public in sources reviewed for this brief.
