Chris Sørensen, the retired Danish footballer best known for his long career with Odense Boldklub (OB) and for five appearances in the shirt of the Danish national team, has died at the age of 49. His death was recorded on 17 October 2026. No cause of death has been made public at this time, and the circumstances surrounding it have not been confirmed.

Born on 27 July 1977 in Randers, Sørensen began his football life in the amateur ranks of his home city, playing youth football for Randers KFUM before a spell in the youth teams of Randers Freja. He turned professional at the age of 21 when he joined Randers Freja in 1998 under manager Frank Petersen, starting out as a left winger before being converted into a left back by manager Ole Fritsen, a position that became his trademark for the rest of his career. He helped Freja rise from the Danish third tier into the second tier before moving on to Vejle Boldklub in 2002.

It was at Odense Boldklub, which he joined on loan during the winter break of the 2003-04 season and signed for permanently soon after, that Sørensen built his reputation. He quickly became a fixture in the side, missing only three league games across six seasons, and helped OB finish third in the Danish Superliga in 2005-06. He was named to the Superliga Team of the Year in both 2006 and 2007, served as vice-captain under Ulrik Laursen and later Esben Hansen, and was part of the OB squad that won the Danish Cup in 2007. When Hansen's time at the club came to an end, Sørensen stepped up as team captain, leading the side to second-place league finishes in both 2008-09 and 2009-10. He later returned to his home city to play for Randers FC from 2012, before ending his senior career at Vendsyssel FF, retiring from professional football in 2017.

At international level, Sørensen was called up to the Denmark League XI for a series of unofficial fixtures in Hong Kong in January 2006, and returned for further League XI tours in 2007, 2008 and 2009. His full senior debut for Denmark came in October 2007, in a 3-1 win over Latvia during qualifying for UEFA Euro 2008, and he went on to win five caps for the senior national side. In 2017 he enjoyed a late moment in the spotlight when he represented Denmark at the inaugural Star Sixes tournament at the O2 Arena in London, scoring four goals on the way to the final and being voted Star of the Tournament ahead of players including Robert Pires and Gilberto Silva.

Sørensen was remembered within Danish football as a dependable, hard working defender who gave long service to the clubs of his native Randers and to OB, where he captained the side during one of its more successful eras. Tributes from clubs and former teammates had not been widely reported at the time of writing, and further details about his death, including any funeral or memorial arrangements, are expected to follow in the coming days.

just read about the 2007 Danish Cup win for a project on Scandinavian football, didn't expect to see his name in the news an hour later. 49 is no age at all.
