Enzo Bianchi (1943-03-03 to 2026-09-01) was an Italian Catholic layman, biblical writer and monk who founded the Bose Monastic Community and later, after a painful break with that community, the small fraternity of Casa della Madia near Ivrea. Born in Castel Boglione in the Monferrato hills of Asti province, he grew up in a rural world he later evoked in books such as Il pane di ieri. Italian biographical notes record that his father was the son of Russians who fled the revolution and took the surname Bianchi in Italy, and that his Italian mother died while he was still a child. He earned an accountancy diploma, then began economics studies at the University of Turin. In the climate after the Second Vatican Council he animated early interconfessional Bible groups and was active in FUCI circles. Without finishing his degree, he withdrew to an abandoned farmhouse at Bose, a hamlet of Magnano in the Biella hills. He dated the start of the experiment to 8 December 1965, the day the Council closed. For about three years he lived largely alone. In autumn 1968 the first brothers and sisters arrived, Catholics and Protestants, committing themselves to community life, celibacy, prayer and work. Bianchi wrote the community rule and served as prior from the founding years until 25 January 2017.
Bose grew into one of the best-known Italian monastic experiments of the late twentieth century: mixed men and women, Catholic and Protestant, with fraternities beyond Magnano (including Ostuni, Assisi, Cellole near San Gimignano, and Civitella San Paolo; a Jerusalem presence existed for a time). In 1983 Bianchi and companions founded Edizioni Qiqajon, a house specializing in biblical, patristic, liturgical and monastic texts. He preached widely, wrote for La Stampa, la Repubblica, L'Osservatore Romano, Avvenire and French outlets, and published hundreds of books with Qiqajon, Einaudi, Rizzoli, San Paolo and others. In August 2004 he was part of the Vatican delegation that returned the icon of Our Lady of Kazan to the Russian Orthodox Church. Popes Benedict XVI and Francis named him an expert or auditor at Synods of Bishops in 2008, 2012 and 2018. On 22 July 2014 Pope Francis appointed him a consultor of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity. Universities and cultural prizes also marked his public standing, including honorary degrees from the University of Turin (2000) and the University of Gastronomic Sciences (2016).
On 26 December 2016 he announced his resignation as prior, effective 25 January 2017; Luciano Manicardi succeeded him, and later Sabino Chiala was elected prior (2022). From 6 December 2019 to 6 January 2020 the Holy See conducted an apostolic visitation of Bose concerning the exercise of authority, governance and the fraternal climate. A singular decree of 13 May 2020, signed by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin and approved by Pope Francis, ordered Bianchi and three others (Goffredo Boselli, Lino Breda and Antonella Casiraghi) to separate from Bose and move elsewhere. The community published the decree on 26 May 2020. Bianchi long resisted leaving; further instructions in early 2021 pressed him toward the Cellole fraternity. In June 2021 he finally left Bose for Turin housing offered by friends, describing the period as exile. In 2022-2023 he and companions renovated a farmstead at Strada Camadio in Albiano d'Ivrea, known as Casa della Madia (House of the Bread Chest). Community life there began formally around 2 July 2023. On 16 December 2023 Pope Francis received him in audience. At Bianchi's funeral, Goffredo Boselli testified that Francis had told him: "Enzo, ti chiedo perdono. Quello che ti hanno fatto e stata una carognata" (AgenSIR, 2026-09-03).
In his last weeks Bianchi wrote to Bose prior Sabino Chiala seeking visible reconciliation before death. An exchange of willingness followed, but hospitalisation prevented a meeting (Famiglia Cristiana; Bose statements). Hospitalised after renal failure that led to metabolic coma (Corriere; InfoVaticana), he died on the morning of 1 September 2026 at Molinette Hospital in Turin, aged 83. Bose announced the death with the Paschal troparion. The funeral was celebrated on 3 September 2026 in the parish church of Castel Boglione, with Gregorian Requiem elements and Gospel readings as he had requested, and with both Casa della Madia and a Bose delegation present. Cardinal Matteo Zuppi sent a message read at the rites. He was buried in Castel Boglione cemetery among the hills and vines, as he had wished.
